Pete,

They don't really, in the UK we have pints and half pints, although the euro metric police are trying to have their say on that.

The Aussies have different sizes, hence schooner, but you can go into many places and ask for a pint - at least you can in the places I have been to that serve draught beer.

But normally its a schooner and often a tinnie or stubby, meaning a can or bottle, but those terms seem to be dying out, or so it seems to me.

Ah ha..I've just spent some hours of golden nectar enjoyment with an Australian citizen, and he also does not know why a "schooner" is called such in Oz. He did say (in his day) there was something called a "lady's skirt" that is 5 oz and usually used as a chaser after a shot of hard stuff. Then there was a 1/2 pint and a schooner. He says in his time there were no pints served in Oz. He's 69. From the lips of a veteran I can assure. One of the first divisions into VN from Australia in 1965-66. Pete

Your handle fits you to a tee. You've had your face elevated for so long looking down on other people, your nose is forstbitten. You are nothing but a ***** troll who has contributed nothing to this forum. Read and understand the categories asshole. There are those where one can talk about what he/she wants, especially now when there is not much going on in Hua Hin or elsewhere. If what is said on here is to your disliking, please go elsewhere and absolutely for sure, don't retire here in this country. There is enough foreign rubbish here already. Pete

I'm back from my holiday, which consisted of two days at a Wat for another Thai friend who has passed but of course, something like this is of no interest to you, and I am certainly not your friend.

Listen, you can stalk me or any other American member on here that you wish. You started with the "septic" deal which I dropped. However, when another member took exception, you replied "...it's really not what you think of yourself, but what others think of you...." Then weeks later, you search out the only subject title that has an American reference (Yank) and go at it again with your dribble.

I don't know or care what happened to you in your life for you to apparentlly have this overwhelming dislike for America. Really, no member on here does.

I'm on this forum as it teaches me something everyday. In turn, I hope what I post from time to time is educational as well, especially about our adopted country here. The expats on here are exceptional in character, knowledge and friendliness, which is what makes this forum so interesting and fun. Apparently this is lost on you.

Now, if above is also petard, so be it and anticipate the same continuously. You keep coming at me and you know what I'll do? Simply ignore you as you are a waste of everyone's time.

As I already mentioned, find a forum where you fit in better, perhaps there is one somewhere for people who suffer from your condition. Petard

Pete,

look this link up:

http://www.madaboutsherry.com/serving.html

Someone else mentioned that in the UK, sherry is a drink mainly for old ladies and vicars. This is true of cream sherries, which are served in tiny little glasses. These are the schooners. they are sometimes concave in the middle. It is the sort of poncy glass you would have a flaming sambucca served to you in.

However, the Spanish like their sherry dry (they export all the crap cream sherry to the phillistine British blue rinse brigade) and drink it in proper wine glasses. It is a wine, not a liqueur, after all.

thumbs up

Hi Pete

Hope you don't mind me calling you Pete...... yes very interesting to hear your comments. As an American I am sure you value freedom of speech and if you don't agree with what I say then thats ok with me, thats what free speech is all about. The fact that you stooped so low as to hurl low class insults at me shows a distinct lack of class...something I would not have expected from an educator such as yourself.

The term septic was not invented by me but has been around forever and my American friends certainly take no offence as they counter with their own brand of humour......none of them have a humour bypass

As regards how the world sees your country if you don't believe that the world sees your country in a different light from you then you must be leading a very sheltered existance.

I hope that in the future if you disagree with any other members comments that your language is more polite.

Have a nice day Pete.... Wink

No flaming, please.
Keep it on topic, which was those sailing ships, or glasses, or something as far as I remember.

Thanks Edd and Jaime, We still await a conclusion from Sage Guess who I believe is diligently investigating "schooners" of all kinds. Very Happy Pete

As a further note, I was discussing this thread with a work colleague and they postulated that schooner glasses are so shaped (having a concave 'waist') so that in days gone by they could be stored efficiently and safely in between the convex brandy glasses aboard navy ships. Possibly even allowing them to be tied together with string. That would tie in with the nautical name too.

I could find no definite answer to the schooner question either. My personal theory is that the flared shape of the sherry glass is similar to the hull form of a 19th century American schooner which also tended to flare from the waterline upwards, but jaime’s theory is just as plausible.

I don't think we've heard from anyone in Oz as what shape their beer schooners are down there, same as the UK sherry? Pete
