Some questions for the experts.
Three different hotels in Thailand this month and all three had only unsecure networks available.
1) Assume data can only be picked up that is sent/received on that network and within range of that providers wireless signal?
2) How savy of a hacker do you have to be to hack into a wireless network?
3) I would think the risk very minimal outside of Bangkok for a hacker to intercept a signal and steal data?
Thanks. Pete |

1) Data from specific shared folders on any computer on the network may also be accessible. Depends on the security settings.
2) Not very but again it depends on security measures taken, almost anyone can get a "free ride" on someone else's connection if it is not secured.
3) People will only steal what is worth stealing ... unless they're bored! Regarding signal strength yes, you need to be within proximity to access it. _________________ I've got a bad feeling about this |

Thanks. My 'intranet' is completely turned off. My system is set up to share files with no one.
I asked as when I am at these places it would be nice not to feel paranoid to check a bank balance, do a billpay etc. I know it may be a roll of the dice but sitting in a hotel in the boondocks of Chantaburi I think?? I feel safe....LOL. Pete |

You should be ok if file sharing is off and you have a half decent firewall ... unless of course someone has targeted you specifically. _________________ I've got a bad feeling about this |

As Buksi said, you should be alright. These places are hardly fraudsters paradise.
As for the wireless factor the only real security difference is that you can tap in completely undetected and intercept any transmissions if you want to. You then have to get through all (if any) of the security measure set up on your PC, the suppliers router and the web site your are logged on to. In this way it is no different from someone tapping into a length of UTP or coax, it is just that is is much harder for them to be caught red handed.
Having said all that I would still advise not to use any public communications to transmit or receive sensitive data. Personality theft is big business in the West and westerners living abroad make great targets. _________________

New question on this subject.
Is there some kind of antenna device you can buy and hook up to your computer that extends the range a wireless signal can be picked up, say a few kilometers? If yes, does anyone know the maximum range you can get out of them? Thanks. Pete _________________ "What America needs is a huge hypodermic needle of morality." Alice Cooper 21 Sept. 2007 |

sorry to double up....
"home" wireless signal boosters are available, but they only have a range extension of a few hundred meters and that is also dependant on obstacles such as buildings etc. Metal and electrical cabling can screw signals right up....Market Village causes a big old signal shadow....
A few kilometers would need a full 30 or 40 foot mast and a big sodding booster.....and I dont think the Thai authorities will be too supportive of you setting one up....
I read somewhere Sunshine have set one up though.... |
