Will you register your mobile phone?

I don't profess to be an expert on mobiles - I don't even have one - but was wondering how many of you out there are going to register them before 31st July.
If you own a mobile phone and use the pre-paid method of calling, rather than monthly billing, you have until the above date to register your ownership with the authorities. This is in an attempt to reduce the number of bombs down south being triggered by them.
I've heard lots of opinions - ie, no terrorist would want to plant a bomb that can be triggered by a stolen phone. They wouldn't want unwanted phone calls at the wrong time. However, I believe you can simply program the phone to only accept one number.
Or, is this another attempt by Our Fearless Leader to build his database up with names and addresses of all the estimated 15 million mobile owners in the country, many of whom have not been wise enough to buy his products.
After all, he made his money out of the things.

I'd have no problem registering if they made the process easy.

But I figure this will be like everything else in Thailand, 2-3 hours of wasted time sitting in the cop shop with a stack of paperwork including house papers for the place you rent, 15 photocopies of everything you own, 2 non standard sized photographs and your mothers birth certificate.

You may be oversimplifying.

It didn't take the UK government long to realise that if you had a register of mobile phone details and their owners, it is a relatively simple exercise to check where an individual is, when the phone is switched on - based upon their signal.

Anti-terrorism or Orwell - only you can decide.

does this apply to non Thai residents who use a Thai SIM in their UK phone when visiting LOS. Thai SIM cards can be purchased on ebay in the UK. Will these work after 1Aug?

I read somewhere that the grace period is up until December 31 and, you will be able to register at any shop that sells mobile phones. You will need only your Thai ID card or foreign passport in our case. Pete

I checked the mobile phone registration with Hua Hin telecom on Petchkasem Rd near the Bangkok Bank.

As Pete says you have until the end of the year to register. A photocopy of either your ID card (Thai) or passport is required.
The SIM card can also be registered under anyones name as long as they agree and submit copies of their I.D.

I wasn't told I had to fill out any forms - but as I didn't have my passport with me I didn't continue with the registration.

And at the stroke of midnight on New Year's eve your phone will go blank if you don't register. No "ringing" in the New Year... . I understand that you won't lose your number unless you delay to register beyond the point when you would lose your number anyway by not renewing your minutes. Pete

When this law was first muted, it was suggested that farangs etc, would not be able purchase a sim card , once the law was enabled.

I gather from your contributors , that a non thai will now be able to buy a sim card on production of a passport.

When I heard about this, I thought that this not going to happen because too diifucult to close billions and billions pre paid cards And my sim is working fine without a registration.

But still I think that I ll' chance my old one2call to some another beacause, I have a suspicion that they over charged mine card. I can see this every morning when I wake up---> no credit att all and then I try to remember that what happended last night Every night same, I go to Bintaban and next morning no memories and no credit. This have to be some big conspiracy.

So conclusion is that if I chance mine sim card maybe I can have mine memories and even some credit in my phone...

Just bought a DTAC SIM card and recharge card two days ago with no questions asked.
