As in , previously in the UK , my circle of friends mainly consisted of people in professions such as builders, electricians, mechanics etc ...

Ive now been in Thailand for nearly 5 yrs , and Hua Hin for 2 . Why is it, in that time it has been so difficult to meet people with similar backgrounds ?

All i mainly seem to meet here is ex SAS, ex fighter pilots, ex navy seals , ex special forces etc etc etc .....

I am always so impressed by these people and their fantastic tales of uncorroborated bravery , but i am just not worthy .

Thailand or Lieland ???

couldnt agree more steve, its one of my pet hates here, people just cant seem to admit their real backgrounds.
i dont have a problem with what i used to do, some people might be embarassed about it and lie, but i dont care

i got made redundant in oct 2003 when our product became non-profitable

yes collectively we failed
i like to think i did my best, i was never late, arrived early most of the time
i never had an accident at work (unlike some daft french bloke that worked for our sister company)
for decades i sat in the same old seat, pushing the same buttons, pulling the same levers
i had to wear a cap and be polite to our customers

im not afraid to admit that i was a concorde pilot
.

Ah yes the old 'I was an S.B.S WWII submarine commander routine' Sadly there are many of these delusional characters in and around Hua Hin.
Of course being a very wealthy international arms dealer and highly sucsessful oil exporter myself, I also seek real people to mix with.
I think its a case of new place, new identity. After all who wants to admit to being a - gold five star Mc Donalds employee of the month... Shocked

Never mind, you should be very proud of your achievements, however trivial they are compared to the VC I won when we invaded Scotland.

Or was that ours already?

Didn't feel like it at the time.

Life gets so confusing when you pass 30.

(No offense, Jockey, some of my best friends are Scottish. None of them have lived there since they were 17, mind...)

I shot down the Red Baron.
After the war I was first to fly solo across the Atlantic but modesty prevented me from arranging press coverage, unlike that egomaniac Lindbergh.
I wenrt on from there to invent the transistor, discover DNA and found the internet.
I've had a distinguished life full of achievements but no one down soi binthabaht believes me except a few girls to whom i donated funds for their buffaloes to have cosmetic surgery. Crying or Very sad
And worse, I had to pawn my 3 VCs to raise the funds!

A couple of weeks ago when Russian arms dealer Victor Bout’s arrest in Bangkok was all over the news, a couple of girls from a bar I frequent claimed to have seen him around Hua Hin.
Of course it might have been Randy that they were talking to!

Of course it now is easy for you lot to brag and lie about your glorious achievements, now that I created
the World for you. One thing I want to get straight: I did not create you in my image, particularly not Randy.
Sometimes I'm sorry I created the thing. Was a bit of a job, too. Took me all of six days.

I am not dead, never mind what Nietzsche said.

I bet youre starting to regret that question already Steve! SO true though - and dare I say - it seems to be a typical man thing. Not just in HH - Pattaya etc all have them.
The point about 'new country, new identity' is probably close to the mark though, and boys will be boys. Take it all with a pinch of salt. After all - do you really want to choose your mates by what they did/didn't do in a previous life? Or maybe just cos you get on with them as they are.

By the way my fee for that professional counselling advice is £50 + VAT

I try hard never to ask anyone here what they do/did, but if they unfortunately 'reveal' their former incredible job I have developed what i hope is a suitably sarcastic 'Oh really?' to put them off expanding on this. Alternatively I can shut them up by telling them that I used to be an accountant and i can clearly remember the day when i first managed to balance the books... Shocked

Yes - I've had so many different jobs it would bore people silly. But for the last few before and after LOS have specialised in Welfare Benefits advice. Its amazing how many expats in HH get impossible state pensions and other benefits! Rolling Eyes

Typically I don't tell people about this but today I will. Actually it was in the paper at the time but most of you would be to young to remember about it.

I was the youngest worker at white sands proving grounds. When the atomic bomb was being built. Actually it was a rather boring job as they had me working in the back room splitting atoms.

Since then I have spent most of my time trying to grow hair.
