Was only joking Bill, not to worry.
Next time I am over I will come in and see you. Actually stayed next door at Gert's place last time I was over, so will be handy to have a decent watering hole at that end of town if I stay there again.

Had a lovely sirloin at YOBT on Saturday night - the other half had ribs - they were great loads of meat and not over flavoured - just right! The place is done out really nicely and i will visit again for sure.
Great service from all of the staff.
Thumbs up from me.

Ate there last night
Decor is sumptuous and similar to YOBT
Menu comprehensive
Didn't try the steak and went for the ribs (small) and baked potato. Delicious but a little over dressed with B/Q sauce for me. Cant beat YOBT for ribs
Price wise, a bit high. Ribs, potato and a soft drink 300 Baht
Will go again to try their breakfast,. Looks good and I think they open early but no one seemed to know the exact time
Not many customers but then I went early. Staff very attentive and helpful.
Didn't meet the boss as he seemed to spend all his time on the computer and didn't seem to care about his revenue earning customers.
Maybe I just picked the wrong time but Ill try it again soon _________________ Why does my head feel so bad why does my soul feel so bad - Moby (Dick)

He tried El Murphy's. I was wondering too, but it's at the very top of his post, under 'post subject' _________________ "The question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk? But, can they suffer?" - Jeremy Bentham, philosopher, 1748-1832

The best steak I've had here was at California Cantina. It was a big bacon-wrapped fillet cooked to order and delicious.
For the budget concious Fuji's bite sized steak set is the best steak buy in town. |

I think Fillet Mignon is what you had. Very nice if it is cooked good

I think it's a difficult one to answer Bill
I believe there are a number of factors
1) What was the cut?
2) Imported or local?
3) Who was the chef that night?
4) Was the boss there doing a quality control check?
5) Did the customer request well done, medium, rare or blue
6) How many times has the customer tried other venues?
7) How many repeat visits to confirm consistency?
and finally Is it the customers favourite venue (and therefore biased)?
All these factors come into play for me the main one is who is chef tonight
I'm not a big steak eater, spent too many years in Zimbabwe and South Africa gorging 2kgers in my youth
For me the best steaks come from Zimbabwe, Argentina and Scotland but I'm biased
ps JW in my previous posting I was referring to El Murphys _________________ Why does my head feel so bad why does my soul feel so bad - Moby (Dick)

Richard, I think that a lot of points that you made in the last posting are very relevant indeed when choosing food and a place to eat.
But as a non local, and like most posters on this board, I think that the one visit situation is a very harsh way to judge to a place (especially if it is a bad experience).
Personally I had one of the best steaks I have ever tasted in Malaysia at the Golden Sands Hotel in Batu Ferringhi, on the night I was there it was to die for, one of the best Indian Meals I have had for many a year at the Maharaja's in Hua Hin and one of the best Peking Ducks at the chinese place on the 17th floor of the Hua Hin Hilton. All of which I must say, when I ordered I did have concerens on how the would turn out, as they were not local dishes.
It all depends on how you order you food and much more, whether the staff understand what you are ordering and also any small requests that you make, can make or break a good night out.
Ordering steak in Thailand (and no disrespect to any Thai staff), can be a very dodgy experience.
In a top hotel both waiters and chefs will probably get training on what the difference between Medium and Medium Rare is. To a seasoned steak eater, that can be the difference between enjoying a meal or a bad experience. In a lot of local places perhaps that knoweledge is not passed onto either the chefs or the serving staff.
18 Months ago we were in Koh Samui and was my GF's at the times birthday, plus her brother and his wife were with us, having their 1st trip to Thailand.
I had an aussie friend who goes to Koh Samui a lot and told her that I needed a place for a birthday dinner or lunch and she recommended me the Cliff Bar and Grille which is situated halfway between Chaewang and Lami at the top of the one of the hills on the coast road.
I took my GF's brother to check the place out, looked at the place, at the menu and decided that was the place.
As the views were stunning decided that lunch was the best option and off we went.
We all had varied meals but all were cooked to perfection, a big plus was they also had a cocktail bar to retire to after your meal.
We probably spent about 5-6 hrs at the place and left and headed back to town, happy with what we paid (not cheap but everyone had had a great day) and also they ordered us a decent cab for when we wanted to leave
I have told many people about that place, I would always return there again. In some places on a different day, the opposite could happen and people could have a bad experience.
But with that place, there was an air of professionalism about the place. They had answered promptly emails I had sent from Australia before I got to Koh Samui. When we went to check the place out and just had a couple of drinks, were treated no different than when we went there for the lunch and spent a lot more money.
I am sorry if this has gone a bit off topic, but I think it may need pointing out to a few of the previous posters how to judge a good and bad establishment and how to give the benifit of the doubt in a lot of instances. Constructive feedback (good or bad), I would imagine is always welcome (the emphasis on constructive and not petty).
With the internet it is very easy to sit on an open forum and give out all kinds of bad comments about a place you have been to, but it also does not take long for unfounded bad comments to damage what could be a very good operation in a big way for one small mistake.
Just see how forwarding a reply a complainent recieved to friends after sending what she percieved as constructive critisism to a tapas bar in Brisbane that she visited.
Click on this link below and then go to the Rude Restaurant video and see for yourself
http://video.msn.com/?mkt=en-au&brand=ninemsn&tab=m164
In the video we never actually get to see what exactly the lady wrote, so have to go on hearsay that what she is saying on TV is actually what is in the email. The reply was a bit rude, but I do not think warrented the action of her and her friends starting (what could if she is not careful) a campaign that could result is court action against her by the owner of the place.
Bill in answer to you question of who does the best steak in Hua Hin, must admit have never eaten one for the reasons I stated at the start. But in saying that, the best steak sandwich I have had was in the Sofitel in both in the pool bar and with room service.
Bill I think that you have a lot of balls for fronting and answering what criticisim both constructive and petty has been posted in this thread and must be commended for it.
I wish you all the best and hope your business grows because of it. You seem to have been in Hua Hin for a long time now and have had the nouse to see when things need changing. You have the same basic business, but have tried coming from a different angle, and in doing so seem to have tried to retain your core customers that have previously eaten with you. Good luck.

Four of us, my wife my two friends and I all went along to the same Indian restaurant the night before last, had the worst meal we had ever had.
We told the staff what the problems were with the meal, they were very apologetic. The manager gave us the meal FOC after the complaint and told us they were having many problems in the kitchen. (we paid for our drinks)
We will return.
I believe, when you have a problem, let the manager know, then if you get a good response try again, BUT on your return ask if they still have the same problems. |

Buffalo Bill, I think as we have all said before that things can change staff wise in a very short space of time and can be very hard to keep up the past standards when this happens.
Was a good thing that the manager accepted that there is a present problem and treated your complaint the way he did. It at least showed some proffesionalism in the way he dealt with you.
Hopefully his kitchen will get back to normal soon, as I said before, the food that I had was 1st class.
