Great stuff Oe,
I think it would be a good thread to kick off.
Farang need educating about Eastern culture and Vice Versa. That is Latin by the way. I understand that your boyfriend is Hua Hin's leading expert on that ancient language. _________________

Trying to be brutally honest with myself here and I have been thinking if I have ever said any of these, although some of them are not at all insulting (or shouldn't be taken that way) to Thais. So here goes....
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I like to live in Thailand - I have said this (minus the Yehs) and in fact will say it again - I love to live in Thailand!
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I love Thai women even I am an old man but I still can get a young Thai woman. - don't think I have ever said this but then again I am only 44....but I do love some Thai women.
Yeh Yeh Yeh, Girl - I can look after you as I am the one who have money more than you do. - have definitely never said this - I am not even capable of looking after myself!
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I love Thai food - Yep I have said this and meant it - what is meant to be wrong with that?
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I always complain about what Thai people do - I have complained on occasion about what some individual Thais have done, as much as I have about stupid people from anywhere - is this meant to mean that because we are farangs we are denied the opportunity to express an opinion if it is negative?
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I am a good farrang as I most of times says Thai people drive stupid, but I only drive stupid when I’m pissed. - I have seen more examples of stupid driving in Thailand than in other countries but that doesn't apply to all Thais for sure - in fact I have frequently commented on how good and courteous some drivers here are. Driving pissed is stupid, particularly on a motorbike, and as far as driving my car, guilty as charged I'm afraid. However the only accident I have had driving myself was when stone cold sober, and the only accident I have had when pissed was when a passenger on a motorbike taxi so what can I take from that?
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I am the one who is always right as whatever I say as I am a Farrang!!! - Never ever ever would I say that, and you know I am right because I am a farang....
Yeh Yeh Yeh, yek yek yek braa braa braa braa etc. - looks like some sort of Celtic dialect so impossible for me to even understand let alone say - maybe one of our Welsh, Scottish or Irish posters can translate? maybe it has something to do with sheep?
Being slightly less facetious I can understand how Thais may feel about negative comments, or condescending comments made by 'visitors' to their country, but this doesn't just happen in Thailand, it is all over the world. Many Americans (and others) visiting the UK will complain about how bad English peoples teeth are, how expensive everything is and how small the hotel rooms are. Many people visiting Scandinavia will complain about how much alcohol they are made to drink . Aussies visiting the UK will complain about the weather, the surfing, the beer and pretty much anything they encounter (oh and the cricket...). Essentially they are noticing the differences between their own country and the country they are visiting, and it is human nature to want things to be the same as they are familiar with. Sometimes there are valid points being made by these 'observations' which would actually improve the lives of the people living in those countries (e.g. the standard of driving in Thailand, how expensive everything is in the UK). However the visitor should always choose how (and who to) he puts these criticisms across. I would bet that most visitors will be even more critical of their own country though... |

Right on Wanderlust ! Most people I have talked to would love to come to Canada... and it is a very beautiful country (some parts) but for many various reasons I cannot wait to get out of here. I am very critical of unrestrained government spending, thus very high taxation rates, poor health care system (try and get an MRI here!!) or any sort of non critical operation...
Thailand isn't perfect, but to my way of thinking I can put up with the minor headaches there so that I can enjoy the many good things it has to offer
I do complain a bit about certain things there, but as you suggest, I choose my time and place to vent my displeasure! |

Come on Bombay Gin, If everybody can do like you "travelling around the world because I don't really like the place i'm in", it'll be great.
If I can make a choice I'll love to have a ceramic shop in Vathy Bay, Sifnos Island - Greek. You can sit naked under the sun and draw any thing you like on a deep blue valse.

Yeh Yeh Yeh, I like to live in Thailand --> What's wrong with that. I like to live in Thailand too even I'm not a Farang.
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I love Thai women even I am an old man but I still can get a young Thai woman. ----> I can not blame myself for that, young Thai women approach me with her open arms and I don't want to be rude to push her away. I'm cool, I'm good!!!
Yeh Yeh Yeh, Girl - I can look after you as I am the one who have money more than you do. ---> And you will look after me in another batterfield
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I love Thai food --> Thai food is good I'm adding kilos everyday
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I always complain about what Thai people do --> I love to make my life a little dramatic, then I can be a hero to survise
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I am a good farrang as I most of times says Thai people drive stupid, but I only drive stupid when I’m pissed. ---> The trafic system in Thailand is good, I think Thai people enjoy speeding up their car on those perfect highway. Every countries have their own traffic culture. Come to Vietnam? You will kiss the solid land every time you got down from your bike or your car!!!

I can't be as erudite as Wanderlust, but here goes.
Like to live in Thailand - yes. been doing it for 7 years.
I'm 47 and my wife is 33. So, I'm not sure how I fit into the second category, but I'm happy and so's she.
Yes, on occasions, I have more money than her. However, it's a two way street and there are many things she does that equalise the situation out, as far as I'm concerned. (PS, I'm not talking dirty. Simply how we organise our lives).
I do like Thai food and the great thing is that she can make mashed potatoes better than me now and enjoys doing it.
I do have a moan sometimes and that is not always appreciated by the wife. I would reckon it's 50/50. Sometimes I'm right and other times definitely wrong - especially after a beer or three.
Thai people, in the main, drive like twats. I read yesterday that there were around 13,000 fatalities on the roads last year. I walk now after nearly losing my leg to one of the drunken young twats. Don't start me off on their driving abilities!!
Most of the time I think I am right. But, you know, it's quite a salutory lesson to be torn down a strip or two by the wife when I'm obviously wrong. In my situation, it's just being stubborn which gets nobody anywhere, very quickly.
I'm lost on the last point, Oe. It's all double Dutch to me and as far a I'm concerned, everyone in the whole wide world should speak English anyway

The cynic's view:
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I like to live in Thailand - But not made to live as a border hopping fugitive
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I love Thai women even I am an old man but I still can get a young Thai woman. - It's still a man's world in Thailand
Yeh Yeh Yeh, Girl - I can look after you as I am the one who have money more than you do. - But don't worry, you will soon have more than I do...
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I love Thai food - But I'd rather have a steak
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I always complain about what Thai people do - Because they are clueless, self absorbed chancers bumbling through a lao-kao induced (for men) or soap opera inspired (for women) dreamworld
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I am a good farrang as I most of times says Thai people drive stupid, but I only drive stupid when I’m pissed. - Thai people drive as though they are pissed even when they aren't
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I am the one who is always right as whatever I say as I am a Farrang!!! - Correct, the chip on your shoulder is entirely appropriate!
Yeh Yeh Yeh, yek yek yek braa braa braa braa etc. - As much sense as is made by Thais from bargirl to prime minister
No offence, eh? _________________ "The man who never made a mistake never did bugger all" - Old Welsh proverb

Now come on all of you.
We have two moderaters pretending that they are educated. Obviously they spend all of their time reading dictionaries.
But Lin you no convince me no more.
The Otomanguean family contains about 30 languages, in a geographic area that extends from northern Mexico to Nicaragua. The most widely spoken Otomanguean languages are Otomi with 300,000, Zapotec with 300,000, and Mixtec with 250,000 speakers.
How on this planet would a young Vietnamese sales lady know stuff like this. Information like this, nuclear physics, thermo dynamics, relativity, quantum mechanics and subject anthropology (my own specialist subject) are totally confined within the realm of intellectuals like yours truly.
But anyway keep posting. The most beneficial of rewards in our short lives is humour.
Well I suppose a good shag with the right person is OK. No applications from Wanderlust or Lomu please. _________________

Well not really. A sfar as I am aware that language is only spoken one thousand kilometres south in Central Peru near Araquipa, or did you by any chance get the spelling wrong?
You do not normally get anything wrong. _________________

Ha ha, me and 1 friend just finnished 3/4 of a Remi botter. We sat in front of Hanoi Opera house and sang like nuts...After the drink we agreed that the Off road bike is too high for us to climb up. Maybe that's why I think about Atect, I think they have different name like from the Popolocan system... not sure...
Maybe we should ask Oe to explain it herself.. _________________ I'm adorable crazy ! :-) |
