Let's see what results we get from this. I would hope infrequent posters will participate as well to give us an indication of the mood out there. Pete Cheers

No at the moment Pete; I’m coming at the weekend, but if the financial crisis gets much worse, I can see things changing as to how many times I visit in the future as I might be out of a job!

i voted yes in general.
i had intended to travel out in dec for a few months but things aren't quite panning out in that respect.
so it's a case of being cautious & seeing what develops over the next few months.
Sad Very Happy Cheers

I answered 'no' on behalf of Ma, Pa, Sis and Brother-in-law who are coming in December. I did not consult them, nor they consult me about giving me the middle name 'Neville'. Every dog has it's day.

Good poll Pete, whatever the results show there's sure to be lots and lots who will be cancelling expensive holidays over the coming years. Gonna be a miserable time for many.

I will be there 16th December, no problem. 4th time this year, only been back here for less than 3 weeks !

Tried booking a different small hotel/guesthouse yesterday and they are fully booked for December so some tourists are coming.

Got back from a few days in Hong Kong last night. No shortage of tourists there whatsoever, even the very high prices do not seem to be putting people off.

An iced black coffee was around 240 baht - nearly started taking milk and sugar again to get my money's. A small glass of wine and a beer was over 700 baht.

As for the price of food......

What I found more surprising was the number of Australians there saying how cheap everything was.

Nothing seems to be putting off all our friends and relations from visiting us here, in fact seem to see more of them than when we lived in the UK!!!

For local expat residents, I don't think you can see the poll results as you can't vote, and if not a Mod....the current results are 1 yes and 5 no. I'll try to update the results for you daily. Pete Cheers

I did not vote but have changed my plans 'cos of the economic situation. Not bothered about the trouble in Bangkok. Was booked to fly 19 Dec but have changed to Jan as it is considerably cheaper.

Was talking to a leading Far East Travel Agent in UK recently and they say that many people have cancelled travel plans to the Far East'cos of the economic situation.

.

you ain't kidding Shocked
was just browsing through the flight prices for dec Shocked Shocked
i expected them to be high but not as high as they are Sad
i know a lot of the regulars that travel out to the far east for the winter are not going this year because of the current economic situation.
jan/feb would be fine by me, not overly keen on the mass tourist scene anyway Very Happy

Anytime after the 1st week of December they fly up.
I've only paid £610 with Emirates for December 5th.

Just a comment in line with what RZR mentioned concerning months.

If you've never looked at September and October because you're scared off by the monsoon, don't be.

- Never rainy or cloudy for more than a few hours, or day at most.
- Showers keep things cool and fresh and pristine when the sun emerges.
- With winter approaching, the ambient temp decreases weekly.
- Prices are still low season rates everywhere.
- no crowds.

Just a delightful time IMHO. Better than March-June when sweltering. July-August not bad, but not as good as Sept-Oct.

Maybe in 2009 consider months 9-10. Pete Cheers

PS: Given BG's post below, I need to quantify the above. I'm talking about near South and Eastern Gulf coastal Thailand for the months mentioned, not the Andaman side, the North of the country or Issan. Pete Cheers

A friend of mine who is a seasoned traveller just called me a few hours ago. She was due to leave for Krabi tomorrow night. The combination of what´s going on in Bangkok and the weather forecast for down south caused her to cancel her trip. I tried to make her change her mind, but could not.

I dont understand why anybody who's been to Thailand before would cancel a Holiday because of whats happening in BKK.
My Old man is in BKK now in fact.

i see what you're saying pete, i was just reasoning towards a lot of tourists that like to get away for the xmas & new year period.
i know the prices for the week baa baa states is always a lot cheaper but i like to fly direct if i can or if not a european stop.
some of those mid east stops are far to long for me to contemplate Sad

Neither do I, BaaBaa. Particularly this particular person who´s been around the world a few times, on her own to India and Thailand before as well. Maybe it´s because of the press here.
