I don't see the relevance here. As you say, cloning has been around as long as plastic has been around. The point I was trying to get across was the security (or perception of it) of the PIN is paramount. In IT, reading and writing have completely different implications.

Additionally here, it used to be the case that it was not possible to unblock a card althought the instruction could be cancelled if captured in time.


I've called security again just now and they say there is nothing showing on their computer that I attempted to use an ATM. "Uh, it was 10 mins ago". "Don't worry, Mr Lomu, we know immediately". Their only suggestion, that does make sense, is if the link's down between the two countries. She said this does happen occasionally, especially around this part of the world. Hence their having no immediate record of my trying to access one.

This response is totally plausible. If your bank did not see the request it means they did not get it. That means it got rejected or timed out somewhere on route. The employe is alnost right in saying that "we know immediately". It is actually a few hundred milliseconds.


the girl suggested that I might unfortunately still experience problems form time-to-time with ATMs, for the next couple of months.

I would have asked her to elaborate. What does she know that she is not volunteering to inform you of or was it just a case of lets try and appease this guy so that he doesn't bother us again with Thai comms problems.



To summarise I would contact Barclays UK directly by whatever method you can and as cheaply as possible and ask them what their official position is regarding withdrawls of cash from ATMs in Thailand. If you copy an email to the Banking Ombudsman and APACS you might actually get a reply. rasta

another load of dribble the two biggest and longest posts and what a load of dribble and of absolutely no use to anyone who cant get their cash.

hear this the guy wants to know how to get his money he couldnt give a rats arse what the internal average dimensions of a bank tellers cubicle are (but i bet you will tell him)

He wants to know how others have got round it. At least i have given an option from recent experience.and it worked for me and my mate

bugger didnt realise you twas of opposite gender but then i played hockey against the wrac and they were by far and away the dirtiest buggers i ever played against more bruises per sqare inch in 90 mins than against the royal irish rangers and the argyle and sutherland highlanders combined.

Seem to remenber that we have had a similar theme on another thread recently. I Bank with Barclays for business and though am in UK most of the time travel frequently to Bangkok and Hua Hin. This year virtually every visit has resulted in Debit cards being blocked after the first withdrawal. This is in spite of the Bank knowing of my visits and me complaining to my local Business manager. It seems that this is going to be an ongoing problem with ATM's in Thailand as far as Barclays are concerned. At least the local Banks are aware of what is happening and are know helpful when you want to withdraw money using the card in the Bank.

Last time I was in Hua Hin I used the email facility at the Post Office to access my online banking details. The terminal I used was attacked by a virus which tried to gain my passcode details. The online Bank detected this and then blocked the account. I found that the problem was almost impossible to resolve from Thailand mostly because the Bank's Online call centre is in Mumbai and it is almost impossible to understand what the person is saying over a poor line from Hua Hin. I only managed to resolve the problem when I returned to Uk and set up new passcode procedures. It was good to know that nothing could get in or out of the account after the attempted attack but was a real nuisance. Has anyone else had problems with viruses from internet cafes in Hua Hin.

Hey lomu
this guy is right,Nationwide flex charges 1.75% handling on overseas currency transactions as opposed to 2.5% for all big banks,may sound like chickenfeed but if you change money a lot then its worth it.Also banks like nationwide try harder as they are smaller and tend not to take their customers for granted.However maybe too late if you are not in London anymore

I just got money out of the ATM from Bangkok Bank.

I never said I was duped, I said (in so many words) that NATIONWIDE were INCOMPETENT. Nothing to do with small print, and I find your post quite an insult. We ticked a box on the form that said REPAYMENT rather than ENDOWMENT mortgage, which we discovered much later had been totally ignored, and an assumption made by whoever processed the form that we were like all the other sheep at the time, because Endowment mortgages were the rage - I never thought they were a good idea (this was in 1987) and was proven right. As I said before, I judge a bank on how it deals with problems, and the Nationwide tried to blame me and my wife at the time, and it was only after a full investigation by the Ombudsman that they were forced into recompensing some of what they should have done in the first place.
AS I SAID BEFORE, AVOID THE NATIONWIDE LIKE THE PLAGUE!

Sargeant get your dummy and get to bed. This post is of no interest to you so don't read it.

To solve a problem you must understand it and the postings so far indicated more than one problem requiring more than one answer. The OP stated a specific problem but indufficient details for me to suggest a solution. I have now spoken to the OP directly and got the lowdown.

By his reckoning 50% of transactions in the last six month from Barclays have failed. He has also stated that Barclay's have stated that on at least one occasion they had not had a request. Other people have told me this is similar with other UK banks.

As I have already said comms in Thailand is flaky and has deteriorated recently.

This of course does not solve the OPs problem and is just speculation as to the casue. So with the knowledge I have now, which is like getting blood from a stone from people who think ATMs work by magic, here is what I suggest to solve the problem long term.

Get a telephone or Internet banking service made available to you by your UK bank.

Set up a standing order to a Thai bank at regular periods (monthly to six monthly. This may require a transfer via Bank of Bangkok in London. Anybody can PM me if they need to know how to do this.

Use the Internet or telephone banking system, (Skype can be used for telephone calls to reduce cost to about 2 baht per minute) to make adjustments and check on transaction details.

Withdraw cash from the Thai banking system which has no comms problems as yet.

This could actually save money in the long run. Firstly you get a better exchange rate and secondly you can play the Baht/PST rate to your advantage.

And most importantly of all: make sure that your trouser creases are straight and that your boots are polished so that you can see your face in them.
