Nationwide are not bankers but wankers

I must say that I have always found the Nationwide to be very effecient and helpful well at least at the Rhyl and Chester branches. Opening bank accounts and now taking a mortgage out with them
Sarg as for the identification requirements all banks have to do that now or the FSA will be down on them like a ton of bricks. Barclays were fined over £5 million last year for failing to comply with FSA regulations.
If you are buying a house in UK you will find that solicitors will also ask for identification. It is supposed to help combat Money Laundering.
New legislation to cover more types of busineses comes in in December 2007.

Cheers

Sarge,

I did try to warn you about Nationwide ie how inefficient they were regarding the International scene. I certainly wouldn't want to risk putting all of my eggs in their basket.

HSBC have been advertising for a few weeks that they no longer charge for ATM withdrawals overseas - anybody tried it? I would think HSBC would be a much better bet than Nationwide.

All depends on the account you have, I use HSBC and they charge me 20 quid a month for the privilege unless I have their minimum balance.

HSBC Hong Kong still do, to ATM's here in Thailand. It may depend upon where your account is housed in their worldwide system? Pete Cheers

Sarge, how is Blighty treating you these days? hope you are well. But a bit of advice on he internet banking front; it would be a good idea if you approached that with a bit of caution if you are going to deal with your bank in a similar fashion to how you post on HHAD!

Just FYI, I have a Thai friend here I've known since 1970, he's 74 now. Had a quadruple last month and he seems in fair shape, although weak due to his age. What bothers him most are his legs where they took out the four veins, one each left/right calf, theigh, on the inner sides. He went back for a check up on June 13 and the doc told him if he doesn't start to exercise (walk at least) he will have wasted his money (about 3-4K USD). When I visit him I have to take his arm and walk up and down the sois with him. When I'm not there his wife says he does nothing but sit and sleep. Not good. Sad Pete

PS: I asked him about his diet and he said he can eat beef, pork, fish but not chicken?!, and were not talking skin but any chicken Shocked Go figure. Good luck Sarge, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

They did it again!!!
After having sorted out my "blocking" problem with the Barclays ATM card, it really pissed me off going to get my rent and other bills out today -
"Refer to bank".
So, another call to England and profuse apologies for their not having sorted the situation out every 3 months. I was cut off again after 1 month.
Anyway here's an address for complaints:

Debit Card Services
1234, Pavilion Drive
Northampton
Northants NN4 7SG

Good luck.
Mind you, they do switch you back on in 10 minutes. However, that's hardly the point if I'm brassic and miles from home.

Happened again Shoot em up Shoot em up Shoot em up
This time, after 3 months, I called them a day before deadline - I'd just been to the ATM and it was working.
This time got a ratty, rude operator named Becky who, after going through all the security stuff said "fine your card won't be blocked". "Ok", say I, "I'll make a note to call you back in 3 months".
Not this time - "I'm only giving you a month. You're in a high risk fraud area". "But the last three times I've been given 3 months. Why the change?".
"Because that's all I think think the account is worth in that part of the world" and effectively rang off!! Cussing Cussing Cussing Cussing
Well, Becky, I think it's about time you took another training session on customer service and how to deal with us. Your superior will be hearing about this for sure.
ARRRRGGGH!!!!!

EDIT - just seen my last post, that was only 2 months ago, so this diary reminder must have been done before I was cut off two months ago.
I'm losing touch with reality in this weather. bring on the rain thumbs up
