There was a 3/4 page article about his ex-wifes trial for murder in tonights London Standard.

I can't find it on the website, but others may have more success at: www.thisislondon.co.uk

It doesn't make nice reading, but you knew that. I'm conscious that many of you knew and liked Toby, so I will precis the article as sensitively as I can.

The article is headed by a photo of Toby and his ex-wife - looks like a custody mug shot - and a picture of the farmhouse he sold in Wiltshire before leaving the UK.

He's described as an "English country landowner", his death is described, how he predicted his own death in the short story he wrote - his sister Hannah is quoted about this.

That he moved to Hua Hin and bought 2 bars to run with with his ex-wife, Pannada Laoruang, described as a bar girl from Bangkok, who he fell in love with. That he divorced her because of her gambling debts and gave her 11,000 UK pounds as settlement. That they shared custody of their son.

In April last year she reported her ex-husband missing, but that she had admitted to Petchaburi Provincial Court that she had lied. That she had helped five of her relatives and friends from Yasothon province, NE Thailand to dispose of his body, although she denied premeditated murder. That she had rushed home and found her ex-husbands body.

Two accomplaces admitted murder, but said they were provoked as Mr. Charnaud had interupted them as they drank whisky. They all faced other charges linked to the murder. Two others denied all the charges saying that all theyb did was return his car (doesn't say where to) after the murder.

The report goes on to say how his parents had hired a private eye after growing suspicions about his death. How he led the Police to the perpetrators.

Toby had visited the house to see his son, Daniel. Then the rather sordid tale of his death is relayed, doesn't need repeating here, but that the police were eventually led to the body parts.

The lawyer who is jointly prosecuting is quoted, "the only motive can be that Pannada expected to inherit everyhting through their son."

The article concludes with Tony's mother being quoted as talking about the horror of his death, how he was a wonderful father to his son, and how unfair it is that he has been deprived of a great father and a father who will be deprived of seeing his son grow up, how they welcomed Pannada into their family until they moved to Thailand and "to repay us by murdering my son is beyond my comprehension."

She goes on to say thast she hopes the case is judged fairly but she cannot bear to be there.

The case was adjourned until 6 September.

I hope someone can get a link, if not that this is a reasonably accurate record of what was reported?.

Well, after all that, I found this link on another forum (not TV). The mail and the Standard are from the same stable of papers - I know one of their libel editors - the reports are slightly different but from the same source. I don't read the Mail!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id=398630&in_page_id=1811

Happy for someone to delete my opening post.

I guess there are quite a few people reading this thread wondering who Toby was. Toby was a very unassuming quiet guy who would not do anyone any ill. He trully was a lovely guy who thought the world about Daniel (his child). Toby was close to only a few people, he was a private kind of fella. He is remembered by his friends and i hope his killers get all they deserve.

Thank you very much for the update guys - you will know I've posted several times before on this subject. My wife & I were close to Toby & Som when they lived in the UK, and it was them who introduced us to Hua Hin. Very Sad.

JW, the case was featured on BBC radio here in the UK this morning, so it is still making the news. Maybe it will be on the TV news later.

I knew Toby very well so was a little surprised by the Headline in this morning's Daily Express. "British Tycoon Barbecued and Fred to Tigers". I have visions of Tycoons being multi Millionaires, Toby certainly was not that. Just shows how the papers misreport to sensationalize. The report is also in the Daily Telegraph which also is factually very inacurate. putting Keang Krachan in Issan and statingb that Som lured Toby to her village in the North East.

I agree with JW Toby was a really nice private guy, he did not deserve what happened.

Well, I guess the press will follow through with this now? Strange how they've all suddenly picked up on this? Maybe its because there's been a few stories about LOS recently?

I never met him but I respect those who did - and I've met one ot two - who have all spoken very warmly about him.

This is the latest from BBC news, its an interview with his mother.

Please let me know if you feel by posting these, its too intrusive?

I am sure most people appreicate the information. It is scarce here. I am now on the mailing list of the local newspaper from Toby's home town and have had something recently that states that ther has been a hearing and and adjournment. I think this is why the British Media has picked it up.

The news is very bad PR and tourism especially the way the newspapers spread it about.

Without wishing to offend anyone on this very delicate and personal matter, I believe that the news is nothing to do with PR. Its is purely about reporting events as accurately as possible. I do undestand that some minor inaccuracies have been reported, but I beleive these inaccuracies to not add bias to the report.

The horrific murder of Toby (whom I've not met) is both extremely sad and very shocking. However, even more shocking is that this is NOT a unique situation.

All should be aware, ex-pats, locals, tourists, general public should be made aware of such possible outcomes.

A distant aquaintance of mine (an Englishman) was murdered by his Thai wife in Bangkok in 1995. Other people, I am sure will have known or heard of other such murders here in Thailand.

Apologies again, if my distraction from Toby's death offends anyone, my intention is only to strenghten the value of news reporting (which is quite the opposite of PR) and to highlight a more general warning.

Daily Telegraph gave this item almost a full page and all other posts are quoting from UK papers.Surely the Bangkok Post ort Nation carried this article.I believe the adjournment is only for the sentence to be considered as I am under the impression that she and her family pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty.
Very bad publicity for Thailand but hardly sensational, just accurate reporting of criminal justice in Thailand.

Well I guess its a compliment to Toby that the London Standard today published his short story in full over a double page spread.

Apart from a short introduction, there is a photo of Toby's ex-wife, a scene from a go-go bar? And a picture of Toby with his son Daniel, his likeness to his father is very pronounced.

Maybe someone can find it in the link in my OP?

I know it was published by the HH Observer as well.

I don't know if it's available on the website, but the article in the Telegraph was very good. It was written by a journalist who knew Thailand and was pitched at the dangers of marrying, or falling for, Asian girls. It was not anti-Thai in any shape or form and was actually quite moving.

I've just heard on the local TV news station here in Bristol that Pannada (Som) should be sentenced within the next couple of hours. I will post again if I hear any more. If you guys on the ground hear first, I'd be grateful if you could advise please.
