Saddle or not?

Here is a starter I stumbled on. What surprised me is the difference between the unknowns and the big names. They are all cheaper in the UK than here though.

http://www.b4udirect.com/index.cfm?course=/home/product/00839273/&bhjs=0

The unknowns are usually companies who have contracts with the big names to make the low end models leaving the emerging hi tech stuff to the big companies such as, Western, Seagate, Fujitsu and Hitachi. Others are just low cost subsidiaries.

You may find guarantees are not so good. Here you get 5 years with a Seagate.

It would be interesting to know what you end up with and how much you paid.

Ok you IT freaks, answer this please.
When my TOT broadband internet is down, I still the following info on the PC ....
'Wireless Network Connection (Account name), speed 54.0 MBPS, signal strength: very good, status: connected'

Shouldn't it say 'not connected' or summit ?

Thanks,

SJ

SJ,
That message is telling you that the wireless connection between your PC and the router is still working. However the router can't connect to the internet. You should be able to type an address of numbers into your browser (normally starts http://192.xxx.x.x with the x's being other numbers) which will open your router's control panel - sometimes restarting the router from there will re-establish your internet connection.

Just replied to you in ful SJ when I lost connection hence all I had written!

I "think" the signal strength relates to the connection between your computer and your wifi box not the connection between your wifi box and the interent.

If you go to network and sharing centre you will see a green line between your computer and the box and a big red x between the box and the internet.

Often unplugging your wifi box will sort the problem out quickly, however this does not always work if there is a lot of lightning around

These routers often overheat, especially the cheapo Chinese ones, this will drop the connection.

The technical solution to this is to pull the power cable out, leave it to cool for ten minutes and plug it in again and more often than not your connection will come back.

The two replies above are correct on WiFi signal strength, its your machine to the router - not the router to the internet.

Another request from you IT gurus. My IT days were punched cards and paper tape reels (JD note) Very Happy

I've just killed Bitlord but kept Bit torrent. Bitlord was loaded with bugs etc
I've also just killed Winamp. Ate my RAM and my rusty old laptop doesn't have much RAM

Any suggested replacements? Know some will have been posted before but no sooner do I get something new it's out of date

All suggestions welcome Cheers Cheers

For torrents I use ABC to manage the downloads and mininova.org or thepiratebay.org to find them. Never had a problem.

More on torrents here:
http://www.huahinafterdark.com/forum/u-torrent-t7918.html

For music I run Winamp 5.5 pro on a machine with only 512 Megs of RAM without a hitch.

More on music software here:

Wow Richard, we may be the only two here that ever used punch cards. In my first job I wrote programs on paper, gave them to the punch card pool, (like a secretarial pool of girls typing on punch card machines), got back a deck of source punch cards, read it into a card reader, and along with a processor as big as a VW bug, 3 reel to reel tape drives, and a card punch output machine, it was compiled and I then received another deck of punch cards that were my object program. To execute the program, I had to read those through the reader!

What fun computers were in those days! Rolling Eyes Very Happy

HHfarang

think there are a few of us that come from the good old IT (Data processing) days

Maybe we should open a new thread to tell our tales. Some of mine would have to be under night crawlers though Smile

Gurus

I have an interesting post which would cheer a few despondent bods up which I would like to post

It's an email I received that is intermittent text and pics. How can I post it? or would it be easier (lazier) for me to email it to someone who can? Cheers
