Ihave to do a trip out of the country to get my new one year non-im' 'o' visa . I am looking at the possibility of taking my girlfriend with me for a weeks vacation somewhere.

However she does not have a passport and her family is not keen on sending her their 'tabien bahn'.

My question is, can a Thai passport be obtained without a 'tabien bahn' ?

Thabian bahn is required almost every time that a Thai applies for any kind of a document so I don`t think your chances are good without it.

Well there are those jaundiced enough to say 'Thai efficiency' is an oxymoron.

I am glad to say I and my other half experienced it in abundance today.

A google seach found the url below :

http://www.mfa.go.th/web/11.php

A quick call (quickly answered) confirmed that only an ID card is required if the applicant is over 20 years old.

We arrived at the main office on jangwattana road Laksi, opposite the airport at 8:05 this morning (5 mins after opening).

We were handed number 82 in the queue (Oh my Buddha!).

I was not allowed in the queue.

The other half went to a window (one of several) when her number was called and filled in an electronic application form.

She then paid 1,000 baht for the priviledge.

She then went to another group of booths for her electronic photo and signature to be taken.

The 3rd row of windows checked her ID card and questioned her reason for a passport and completed details for next of kin.

The other half then went to another window where a printed document was given to her with a photo and passport details and a date when to pick up the passport.

from parking the car to returning to the vehicle and being number 82 in the queue took less than 40 mins !

Passport ready in 3 working days.

Bloody marvelous !

Better than Canada !! I applied for a passport renewal Oct. 1. I had to take a number, and sit waiting for 50 minutes in Victoria B.C.'s small passport office. there are 6 "inspectors" since it was noon hour, only 2 were open to process applications. I needed Then about 15 minutes talking to the inspector, and paying my $ 90 (2925 baht) was then told my passport will arrive by mail around Oct. 18.
