| I read the long message from bearhug, and it seems to be from the perspective of a thai guy who has been raised in the usa and is pretty articulate. I am also an asian guy, raised in the usa. but not thai. I am chinese american. My roots are also southeast asian, so when I walk down the street and dont say anything, anybody would think I was a typical thai guy. I dont speak thai, so when I open my mouth, they know I am just another farang. I agree with you that a lot of farang guys go for some pretty ugly thai women. and there is nothing wrong with that as she is probably prettier and thinner than what he can get back home. and she is probably grateful to find anyone who thinks she is attractive and will support her kids or whatever. However, I have found, like you said, that thai society looks down on dark skinned people as inferior, or whatever. In the usa. as you know, many dark skinned people rise to positions of power, condoleeza rice, barack obama, colin powell, to name a few. I recently met a beautiful girl. who would be considered pretty anywhere, but because she is dark, she has a complex that perhaps she is not accepted by thai society in general. As a result, she has a thing for farang guys, really white farang guys, like from northern europe, as I guess opposites attract sometimes. She is treated far better by the farang guy than she would be by some thai guy who would look down on her for being dark and poor. I think the usa is way ahead of the rest of the world in terms of race relations, I cant think of any british celebrities or politicians who are not white. I mean look what happened to dodi fayed. I think sometimes the only solution for these outcasts of thai society is for them to just leave thailand and start a new life, maybe in europe, australia, or america. but I find most thais are afraid to leave, love thailand, the weather, or dont want to leave their families behind. so the only way they can escape poverty is to latch on to the farang either by catering to the tourist trade, or by having a relationship with a farang guy. I have heard many thai woman say, that thai guys are no good, they are butterflys or drink too much, I have met some thai woman who say they love farang guys, but in fact actually hate them as they play one farang against the other until one guy ends up dead and the other guy ends up in prison. As for the typical farang in thailand, I have found them to be somewhat of an outcast of his own home country, and come here because he or she can be accepted despite his faults, handicaps, previous crimes or liabilities. Even a loser can look sort of like a winner over here. so if all the outcasts find each other and live happily ever after, whats the harm in it? |

| I think that anyone who still refers to women these days as "chicks" is still living in the swinging 60s. Shagalicious! which is pretty typical from what I have seen. It seems to me that a lot of the middle age guys here, and I am 47 myself so I think I have some perspective, seem to want to re kindle the years when they were 18 or so. I myself am glad to be away from the political correctness all the time and find thailand free from all the baggage that the western world carrys around all the time. |

| I think it is ingrained into our way of thinking that the guy has to be taller than the girl. why not the other way around or about the same size? I am five 7 , but would not mind a taller girl. look at tom cruise. he is pretty short, but has bucks and charisma. also , one girl says she likes guys who look like a gq. magazine, but when was the last time g.q. put an asian guy on its cover, or in its advertisements? Are we all slaves to what the media portrays as beautiful, to what a few magazine editors tell us is beautiful? I have found that most woman do not want a man who is more intelligent than they are. I think that is why women find professional atheletes so attractive, they have a lot of money, but usually they are not too bright. easier to control the finances that way. A guy who makes a lot of money by being clever or shrewd with his money, is not likely to be attractive to the gold digger type who wants a rich, but dumb husband. I look forward to the day when people are judged not only by how tall or pretty they are, but on the content of their character. I tend to fall for pretty women myself, but if they are dumb, the attraction fades away. |

I would hope that those examples quoted got to their positions because of their ability, not because of the colour of their skin, although in most cases of politicians it is because they were prepared to sacrifice their morals and beliefs and agree with the top man in order to progress.

This has to be one of the most laughable comments i have ever read on this site! Race relations are appalling in the USA; ghettoes exist everywhere, there are no go zones scattered all over most cities there; black (as opposed to asian) Americans are still widely discriminated against despite the presence of high profile black politicians and sports stars. The economic gulf between the black americans and the rest of America is huge, and now some other races are being discriminated against too, like the Mexicans and Cubans in certain states. The state of race relations in a country is not determined by how many non white faces are seen on TV or even stand for election; it is determined by when a country is mature enough to not be counting these type of things.
And as far as I am aware Dodi Fayed died in a car accident, with the emphasis on the word 'accident'. |

Hi Vince, I think you may have been a bit misguided somewhere along the line. I'm a female and, speaking from a female perspective and on behalf of all the females I know, we would generally go for a man who is more intelligent - rather than less intelligent than ourselves. Athletes leave me cold - yes, they can run fast, but brains are more attractive than six-packs.
As far as "gold-diggers go, they are usually beautiful but dumb. The man they pick to dig gold from are usually shrewd businessmen, who are rich because they are intelligent and/or sharks (both of which obviously require a certain amount of grey matter).
What's it like on your planet?

Vincent,
I'm sure you're a good guy at heart but have been mislead terribly. First look up the word 'typical' and learn.
Brought up in the States but what planet do you live on now.
You really need a reality check and fast!! |

|
| Yes, I agree, a guy or gal with brains is probably more attractive than than a dumb person. but I find that the girls I am attracted to invariably want to be in the drivers seat, want to be in control or on top of the situation. that goes for thailand and in california. It is usually agreed that the smarter person is usually the one in control. so a lot of girls go for a guy who is smart, but still not quite as smart as they are. If the guy is dumb, and rich, he will have no trouble finding a girl smarter and poorer than he is, but if a guy is maybe in the top 10% smart, he will have a hard time finding a girl smarter than he is to take control. no matter how much money or lack of money he has. What planet. am I from. I am from california, which is really another planet compared to here. It seems almost everybody on this site is from the same isolated little island known as the u.k. so pardon me for shedding some independent opinions that might come from a different point of view. |

| Yall talk about integration with the thai society. most of the farangs here live in little farang ghettos in thailand. yes, the little gated communities with all farangs in them are ghettos as well. and all the little farang bars clustered together in the same area make up a little farang ghetto as well. there is nothing wrong with that. people like to hang out where the language is the same as back home. makes you less homesick to go to a pub and get the same kind of ale as back home or fish and chips or whatever makes your day. so to categorize america as a bunch of ethnic ghettos is ok by me. blacks like their black areas. asians like their chinatowns, hispanics and cubans like their latino areas. we all visit their areas from time to time and appreciate the difference. it is not a melting pot, but a salad bowl of different fruits and vegetables. we farang in thailand can never really melt into thai society. that would take a few generations. and even then you would still be labeled as different. I might look thai, but know I could not truly integrate into their society even if I did learn the language fluently. I have a different mindset and thats just the way I am. so be it. viva la differance. Like I said, even though the u.k has lots of ex colonies populating it. india, chinese, pakistanis, burmese, ex hong kong people, How come you never see any of these people in parliament or in government? I think britain is probably far ahead of the rest of europe in terms of race relations , but that is probably not saying much. Britain is not even a part of the E.U. and still clings to the pound as opposed to the euro. talk about segragation, when you segregate your money, that is where your real true feelings show. Everybody criticizes the usa. but you know, 50,000 americans died from 65 to 75. trying to keep this part of the world free from communism. but do you see many americans out here opening bars or retiring here? It seems to me the brits stayed out of the hard part in keeping thailand and southeast asia free, but swoop in afterwards to reap the benefits . I hear many british people criticize america for its actions in the middle east. americans are stupid, etc, etc. they say all this stuff in front of me because they dont think I am an american as well. because I am not white and look like some thai guy that does not understand a word. so I can sit back like a fly on the wall and hear all this anti american stuff without anyone knowing. So why is it that tony blair does whatever bush tells him to do. runs along like his pet dog, and sends british troops into harms way in afghanistan and iraq? Is he just another politician kissing up to the big boss as well? |

| Hi, I am writing from my new planet. california, san francisco california. the weather is about 20 degrees, which makes it a little easier to think clearly. It is a different planet from thailand. no doubt about it. after 6 months in the land of smiles, it is good to get a reality check and see how the rest of the world is living. as to why thai people are starting to resent farangs. Lets reverse the whole situation and put yourself in their shoes. Lets say I guy like me, asian american, comes over to some small town in britain. say edinburgh or newcastle or someplace like that. does not speak the language, but has tons of money from selling his house in america or maybe borrowing a lot of money from his bank at home and taking off with it and not paying it back. What if a questionable guy like this opens a bar at your hometown, hires your sister, ex wife, your daughter, or someone who you grew up with as a barmaid or cashier, or hostess or go go dancer. then play all this foreign music and open up this bar to a bunch of tourists from japan and china who come to your hometown for a good time. How about if you walk into this bar, and all the girls treat the tourists from out of town like heros, and treat you with suspicioun and a little contempt. I think you might resent it a little yourself. that is probably why, the thai guys go to their own bar and the farang guys go their own bar. people really dont want to integrate. integration is really just a fantasy. |

Have you ever actually been to England???
You sound like the stereotypical, non educated, never left your country, redneck that the USA USA USA is famous for.
(But your Thai background and Grammar suggests your not)
America is not the Capital of the world. |

vc,
For a newbie, 2 things strike me about you:
1 You like to hear the sound of your own voice (metaphorically speaking, as this is not an aural medium)
2 You have one hell of a chip on your shoulder, nay, a whole chip pan.
In combination, that makes someone who likes to stir up controversy & trouble...
