Although the roads normally seem dangerous in Hua Hin, they have seemd doubly so this weekend -- probably due to the Jazz Festival and the influx of Bangkokers.

It astounds me how rude and stupid people can be while driving showing absolute disregard for the safety of others.

Where are the Thai traffic police and why don't local authorities take some interest in road saftey?

Traffic was horrible, and even on my bike parking was an issue. Very annoying.

Its a case of drive like a thai. Manners are not at the forefront on the roads in Thailand. Thats just the way it is. You can argue the point that the driving standards in the UK or the US are a lot better but thats not Thailand. All you can do is drive like everyone else and accept the lunacy around you.
Didn't think i'd ever hear a request for more traffic police!!!! Not something you'd hear in the UK

Thats about the size of it, with the additional bonus that people taught how to drive in the west actually learn how to read the road(well most of them).

Theres an amusing but very accurate driving in Hua Hin guide on the expat site:

traffic police also dont know the traffic rules but someone told them that they can ask for money if they find and stop drivers without helmets or belts! I saw policeman stopping a pick up with about 20Thais on it but driver only pays for missing belt!

Actually that is not quite correct.

They DO know the traffic rules but they can only give a ticket for whatever they have been assigned to for that day. ie. helmet, driving license, driving violation, speeding, heavy load etc etc.

If some guy is whizzing past at 180 km an hour but has a helmet on the police will not stop him because that is not his job for that day.... it's simple!!

Says loads about the educational system here (again), doesn't it? Even non-officer rank police are picked from "better" families, meaning either money or honest to God intelligence? Then, they are sent to an academy for training. But......they can still not be given freedom of choice to enforce the law as they are trained to do as police officers? They have to be given daily assignments on which crime to look for? Shocked

Someone find out which day is not bank robbery day. I'm in! Rolling Eyes Pete Cheers

I read an article in the Bangkok Post a couple of years ago. It seems the traffic police in BKK were being tested on their knowledge of traffic laws. I think it was as high as 15% failed miserably. Their punishment: They could not issue tickets for 3 months. I'm sure they could still take roadside fines though. Says it all.
