The best place to celebrate Songkran ( in my rather biased opinion) is up in the Northeast, specifically in Udon. Yes, you see crazies sometimes, and just loads of instances of accidents waiting to happen, but it is mostly Thai people up there and few tourists. Last Songkran we rented the pickup truck, got a water barrel and drove around through a number of small villages. You see little kids with pans of water outside their houses trying to throw far enough to hit us and people literally dancing in the streets.
Great fun, and I never saw anybody get overly aggressive. .the same with my first Songran a few years ago around Udonthani city. As a farang I always get a lot of attention once I am spotted, but it has always been of the kindest sort. . .drunks coming up and putting powder on my face etc. Oddly enough, I have never been into Hua Hin for Songkran, even though I live here. I would never go near Kao San Road ( to watch drunk backpackers throw water at each other on a Thai holiday? Why would you want to do that? I am genuinely curious.) |

| After 4 days in a row of being totally soaked and covered with flour as well i'm well and truly over Songkran. Small bit of advice put your wallet and mobile in one of those plastic sealable bags |
