So where's the best place to view/participate - or not, as the case may be?
And is it really over in one day?
Just wondering what day, as a mad dog and Englishman (allegedly), I should venture out into the midday sun?

Are you really a Songkran virgin then Caller? Oh dear - best to just get a big water gun and go with the flow! A parade should go into town down Naebkerhardt about midday. Enjoy! |

Don't worry about where to buy - they'll be all over the flippin place before long, including all the markets. Word of Warning - go out with minimal clothing. Swimming gear is good, the colour doesn't run! Plus a vest. Leave cameras and mobiles at home. Wrap essentials like cash and cigs tightly in a plastic bag. A pack of wet wipes is handy cos the talcum powder can really sting your eyes.
My first Songkran was on Patpong 2. Baptism of fire! Loved it - but after a while it becomes a bit tedious _________________ 'If'n ya cain't say nuth'n nice, don't say nuth'n at all' Thumper. |

The BEST place for Songkran (IMHO) is to go up to a village in Issan territory. .around Udon. . rent a pickup truck, fill a barrel with water, and the back of the pickup with your friends and then drive around to the small villages and settlements. Much more "like it used to be" and loads of fun. I have very bad memories of Songkran in Pattaya where we got drenched again and again while trying to find our hotel.
Songkran is NO fun unless you can throw water back at people. I plan to skip it here as I have in the past. |

Firstly, its going to be very difficult to view without participating. I've always found that its best to occupy any bar front in Binthabat, and just shoot anybody and anything that moves. However, make sure that you've got a plentiful water supply (iced preferably) at hand. Its pointless trying to avoid it, you're going to get soaked - just sit back and think of England. If you see JW walking towards you with his Weapon of Mass Destruction, be prepared to go in to hiding for a period - you just won't win.
It tends to start the afternoon before, all of the next day and you then get small pockets of fun for a couple of days after that.

Thanks all!
Chas, Ironically, I'm travelling from an isaan village a week before the big event.! The wife was at her family home last year and said it was very quiet. She didn't go into Korat at my request as that's the death capital of LOS during this period!
Margaret - thanks. We'll be there.
Edit: BB - our posts crossed. Sitting in a bar, eh? That seems more like it! _________________ I know nothing |

Fybo, yes you will !
Best Songkran IMO for those who like both quiet AND rough is Chiang Mai.
3 days long overthere.
Happy Songkran |

I spent Songkhran in Chiang Mai 3 years ago and loved every moment cos I'm a big kid at heart and love playing with water.
It lasted a whole week, and the further north you go the longer it seems to last, Chiang Rai and near the border areas were still squirting 6 days after it started in CM.
A sense of humour and clothes you're not fond of are a must!
As has been mentioned, find a bar with a 45 gall barrel full of iced water and get the biggest water pistol you can find (I prefer the thin lances, they shoot further and using 4 rubber-banded together is like having a gattling gun!!)
Songkhran this year is being spent at the Thai temple in Wimbledon, with the wife and son .......no water and definately no beer |

my last songkran was 2 years ago,
had a lot of fun at UTURN.
Nothing in comparison with patters wher you get splatted several days in a row
in HH it is only 1 day ( 14.4)
have fun and get wet |

'Patters'?? Brian Johnston will be turning in his grave. And if you're not careful you'll probably get splattered every day of the year in Pattaya, just walking along and minding your own business...
