Many people have pm'd me and enquired as to the current status of Robbie's condition. I have decided to start this thread to inform other interested parties with news as I receive it.
About 4 months ago Robbie was out playing golf with some friends when he had a stroke (unfortunately not his first) He was taken to a nearby military hospital for assessment and then on to San Paulo.
He lost the use of the left side of his body and his speech was affected, which meant he had to have constant 24 hour care. It has to be said that his condition didn't improve to much whilst in SP and a drive was on to get him home asap, He briefly left SP and moved into sport villa, but another mild stroke meant he had to go back.
Eventually he was told that he was well enough to fly back to Manchester. At the insistence of the British embassy he was to be moved to a Bangkok hospital for assessment a few days before the flight. Thank god this was the case as when he was checked over, the hospital in Bangkok said no way could he fly and indeed had he gone straight from SP to the airport he would almost certainly have died on the flight home!!
He spent a further 2 weeks in Bangkok before flying home just over 2 weeks ago.
He was accompanied on the flight by a Thai nurse and was to be met at the other end by a medical team.
I have no further news at the moment but will post when I have.
We all I'm sure wish him a speedy recovery...... _________________ Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly!

Robbie is from the Manchester area in the UK and had been living in Hua Hin for the past 5 years. He was a teacher at Suan Dusit university, teaching airline and tourism. He played pool for Lips Bar pool, and was my quiz partner at Dicks office every other Sunday.
He could often be seen cycling his bicycle around the area, and often frequented Crawford's in the evening.
I miss our chats we used to have over a few beers....... _________________ Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly!

| I don't know Robbie well but bumped into him often on the pool and bar circuit - I wish him well, and that he has a s quick and as full a recovery as possible. My father had a stroke a few years back and apart from a general tendency to sleep often, he recovered very well, and was in his 70's when he had it. Obviously I don't know enough to compare their conditions, but Robbie should be young enough to recover reasonably well I should think. Thank goodness that the hospital in Bangkok weren't as clueless as SP! |

| I have found out that Rob was an old acquaintance of a friend of mine here who is also from Manchester. His brother back home is in touch with Rob who is still not well but is hopefully on his way to recovering, if anyone wants contact details, send me a PM and I will get the number of the guy who can give you some direct news. |

Robbie is a proper character, miss his crack - a very knowledgeable fella who is well liked by all. If anyone has contact let him know that he is missed.
Want to see him back on his bike soon. |

I spoke to Robbie earlier last night on the telephone.
He is in a hospital in Cheadle south of Manchester and is making good progress in his recovery. He is now able to walk with a walking stick and has limited use of his left arm.
I had a long chat with him, mostly about the weekends sport and the Cheltenham Festival, he was in great spirits and already talking about his return to Hua Hin as soon as he was able.
I have a contact number and his hospital address, which I will supply if you PM me |

Just an update on Robbie, I spoke to one of his friends this week and he tells me that he is making slow but steady progress. He is able to walk with a stick now and is getting more feeling back in his left side as each week passes. I personally wish him a speedy recovery... _________________ Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly!

I had earlier missed this post. I know Robbie personally and if anyone is able to be in touch with him, say hello from Leon, Osmo, JJ and the rest of us. We all hope he´ll get better. _________________ 知彼知己, 胜乃不殆; 知天知地, 胜乃可全

I visited Robbie last week in Stepping Hill hospital, Manchester.
He looked a lot better than the last time I saw him in San Paolo in January. However he will probably always have to walk with a stick and his left arm has not recovered, 6 months after his stroke. However he has been passed as fit to leave the hospital and the social services are looking for a place for him to live near by.
He maintains that once he is fit he will return to Thailand to continue teaching at the university, cycling and playing golf.
I passed on the hellos from Osmo and Leon.

I do hope he can return, but you have seen him lately you are probably better informed as to that likelyhood. It would be so sad if he coudn't return to the place he loved so much!!! I will have to try and get in touch with him before I come back. Please PM me with his number Richard, Thanks. _________________ Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly!
