You are dead right about IPA being brewed for Brits by Brits, it was first brewed at the request of the British East Indian company, who had a remit for all trade, pretty much to the east of Suez.
The first were probably brewed in Burton and quaffed by squadies in India, as you say. I cant think that 18th century Malays would have been big fans of British ale! |

I'd agree with the above. I used to go up to Burton to see Bass on business and I'm sure that was the "story" that they gave.
Brewed in the UK for The Empire out East. _________________ "I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars - the rest I just squandered". George Best. |

We may need an adjudicator to sort this one out,I have always gone along with Guess's sugesstion that IPA or India Pale Ale was brewed solely for consumption in UK.Certainly Greene King IPA has never been sold east of Suez ever as per their advert not so long ago.Perhaps IPA was brewed actually in India for the expats as Carlsberg used to be in thailand.Thought everyone drank gin or rum in india. |

I'm confused now and definitely not certain of my facts, but the Green King one was probably after Bass's from Burton-on-Trent.
I can remember local pubs around Lincolnshire selling the Green King stuff, but also my father stocking a few bottles of Bass's which were labelled "for export only". Just a throw back to the times when it was only meant for overseas.
I'm certain this brew was originally intended for the rear guard in India.
I will stand corrected, though. _________________ "I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars - the rest I just squandered". George Best. |

I have just read this on the net so I’m only assuming its true, apparently Hodgsons Bow Brewery in east London started exporting a pale ale to India in 1750, a trade which grew to 9000 barrels by 1800.
Bass, Allsops and Salts breweries all claim to be the first to have replicated this style of beer as India Pale Ale. The only problem now is that I’m not anywhere near anyone selling any! |

Forget London and the Midlands, the best real ale, emphasis on the real has to come from the West Country. There are some cracking mini breweries springing up every month. The Real Ale Festival last weekend was out of this world. More and more pubs are stocking "guest" real ales and the general concensus is that the quality is in the taste NOT the ABV.
Lager is for ladies and adolescents.
One of the best is also one of the oldest, Bass, served the old way, straight from the barrel using a tap and gravity, it is a treat.
The Red Triangle emblem was also the very first Trademark registered in England.
Bit of useless information, but you may get the question on one of your quiz nights.

John,
I did make that point in an earlier post on this forum. If quality of beer was the only consideration I would have to make about where to live it would be a toss up between the West Country and Belgium. I think the West country would win as I can still stand up after eight pints..
BTW where was the beer festival. _________________

Granted I'm out here in the colonies, and we don't have the history; but we have some great microbreweries, especially here on the
West Coast. All of this is sadly lacking in LOS.

Guess I would agree with you, love Belgium, been twice got A.H`d both times.
But good people.
R.A.F was held at The Teign Brewery,Tuckers Maltings. Newton Abbot
I think there was over 70 real ales from various breweries.
Didn`t manage to sample them all, I think the legs went on holiday after about 5.
Hey that`s good news Hans, I did not realise that the USA went into good beer of their own, never found one yet.Could always get UK imports but it was never the same.
Looking forward to 2007 now.
If you think the bottom is dropping out of your world
Drink real ale and watch the world drop out of your bottom.
