as a deterrant i keep a 55 kilo fearless beast, it has a big slobbering mouth with acidic saliva, a right hairy back and its bark could burst you ear-drums from another time zone
it has curly brown teeth and a bite like an alligator
due to the mess it makes i only allow it inside the house at night, when i go to bed at night
its breath alone could stop a rhino in its tracks

it eats 8 times a day and can consume upto 20lbs of rotting meat a day
mind you if things get much worse in town, i'll probably get a dog too



another option is an alarm system, wireless motion sensors, they have pet settings so your animals do not set them off
the metal security bars and doors do not work, they can be cut, prised open, the sliding ones on the front doors come off their rails when kicked at the bottom

the local police have met with developers and requested they improve security on developments, ie: certain height walls, security men, cctv cameras etc

the local police and the provincial governor has held a meeting with local developers and customers to set up systems that will help prevent future disputes/malpractices etc

From my experience reading news and talking to victims of breakins in Hua Hin, crime seems to be most severe in foreign owned houses and housing estates around the Hua Hin area. One house I know of was ransacked while the owner was abroad. They even hoisted the safe over the back wall, having failed to get it open inside the house. So far, for my part, I have not seen crime in such numbers in condos. Generally speaking, in my opinion, security at condos is far superior to that in housing estates and in many condos crime is completely unknown. If I were the type to be here in Hua Hin part of the year and abroad part of the year, I would choose to buy a condo rather than a house.

I've done it Zimbabwe and I'd consider it here under the right conditions and for free. Just access to the basics and transportation

I think a house sitter would be a great idea. Someone should start a house sitter agency in Hua Hin. One danger, however, thieves seem to know when foreigners are going abroad, through the pipeline I guess, and the house sitter might do well to prepare for the possibility of such a break in. It could be dangerous for him if he were to surprise the thieves.

While I'm not standing up for the MIB, I just want to mention an experience I had back in Scotland about six years ago. I stayed in a small village just outside of Aberdeen. If you've stayed in one of these villages then you'll know that 99% of the crimes in these villages are carried out by youngsters in the village so not much effort would be required from the local police to solve some of them. Anyway, I had been over to Thailand with a mate of mine with whom I shared the house in Scotland. On returning to thr UK we found the house to be empty apart from some small useless goods. Computers gone, sterios gone, TV gone, etc, etc although the cars were still there. We called the police and they promised to send someone to the house. On arrival they walked around for a while, looking into the bedrooms, etc then they sat down at the kitchen table to take a statement. We were told that we would need proof that it had been reported should we want to claim from insurance................................................... well, thats the end of the story because nothing more was ever done.

Just as with the MIB, could the UK police not have taken prints and at least tried to solve the crime?

This seems like a common problem in many countries - the police just don't care very much about the average man on the street. In South Africa the police have gone from being almost nazi to being common criminals themselves. Everyother day one reads of someone who has being mugged or raped by a police officer.

Take the security of your home into your own hands. High walls don't mean safety for you, they mean undisturbed time for anyone wanting to break in. I'm fortunate in that our house is never empty so anyone watching will know that there is always someone at home. This together with the barker Dalmation and the eveil looking Rottie, I suppose the baddies just reckon there are easier targets. Like so many Thais, we had out home built a meter above the ground so anyone trying to clime through a window would be spotted from the road.

Maybe we will still get turned over but at the moment, I live without bars on the windows because my home cannot be my prison. The biggest thing of course is that if anyone did take the risk of getting past a Dalmation and a Rottie and they did break in, what a worthless risk it would be because there is nothing really woth taking...lol (not yet anyway)
