There is an interesting article in this months Observer obviously written by someone who knew Hua Hin several years ago.
How many places in there do you remember? I definitely recall sitting Gee Cuisine of an early morn on many occasion.
Second article down:

I remember when Hilton was Melia and I remember when the whole building didn't exist at all. Also recall The Little Big Horn and the top class darts player Doug. Has anyone seen Doug lately, by the way? _________________ 知彼知己, 胜乃不殆; 知天知地, 胜乃可全

That's a pretty good article, fairly balanced.
And as far as Gee Cuisine is concerned, I was a regular patron in the days when I had a bar. Decent food, decent beer and horrible surroundings. The toilets certainly wouldn't have stood up to the examination that's being exacted on the other thread on HHAD.
I always enjoyed seeing some of the coppers come into Gee's. They'd sit there, have a coffee and chat. That was when I realised it was light outside. Time to stumble on.
BUT, "can I get another burger to take away, please?"
It was a real shame when the restaurant went, but a sign of the times. _________________ "I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars - the rest I just squandered". George Best. |

I bumped into him a few months ago. He still regularly comes to HH, but you've just got be lucky to see him. I didn't ask about the darts, just the golf. _________________ "I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars - the rest I just squandered". George Best. |

Gee's was a real institution, not the most fragrant admittedly but none the less one that any old hand will remember.
It was about the only place open late and you could meet both Thai's and Europeans there (very hard to meet Thai's these days). They just never closed, actually Gee had some sort of row (unusual) with the MIB and was told to close but the door hinges were rusted up as they hadn't been closed for years. it was back to 'business as usual' in no time
The food could be good too, the place opposite 'Suksamran Sea food' was a great place too, good food large portions. Jeb and his mum known to many early visitors to Hua hin
Gee is around again after a period of absence in one of the small places attached to the back wall of the Wat.

Had dozens of Wiener schnitzels with French fries in there. Most of them between 2 and 5 in the morning. Actually it was not a schnitzel in one piece. For some reason they served you 8 to 10 minischnitzels, but very tasty! Where did the owners go anyway? _________________ We are all living in 'the good old days' of the future. |

I'm trying desperately to figure who wrote that article - please reveal your identity!
The author brought back loads of memories (but was a tad out with my bar/guest house name - it was Hare and Hounds) Always regretted that though - it doesn't translate to Thai and should have been called the Dog and Labbit.
But yes, I think we all loved Gee restaurant. It was a good place to relax after we'd cashed up for the night. They did a good larb too. Gee moved to Bintabahn for a while but didn't seem to do so well there.
Lomu was often found at his own place on Bintabahn in the wee hours, (never mind in Gee!)
There was a good German restaurant down BBahn too, called Checkpoint Charlie, run by a guy called Ouvre. He did a great alligator casseroles and built a smoke house out the back. I used to get his smoked ham but usually ate most of it on the way home.
Apart from the demise of Gee (and Hare and Hounds of course!) I think the other sad loss was the old open caff on Petkasem where the buses stopped. Now a Starbucks.
So we are looking for an early 90's HH traveller who knows Pattaya as well, and I can't sleep! Come on, talk to Mags! _________________ 'If'n ya cain't say nuth'n nice, don't say nuth'n at all' Thumper. |

I could be wrong but I have a feeling its the same person who writes the comedy column and goes by the initials DC - he has recently moved back to HH.
Anyone remember when the Paradise disco was the top venue in town ... long before the Hilton came along and stamped out all the competition.
Also remember when Selakam and Poolsuk were purely residential, not too long ago really. _________________ Your powers are weak old man. |

Yeah I can remember the old Paradise Discothequ along the Canal. But my friends from Stamford where never fond about that cheesy place. Hey Exept one of my friend of mine who used to be the "Infamous Pothead" and loved that place. at least you can party on @ Paradise until the wee hours which many of my senior friends had done. _________________ "Hertha BSC Berlin, Puhhh but still hovering in Limboland! Thanks guys, I'd already had a PM answer, so could sleep!
Buksi - yes Poolsuk WAS largely resdential when you and I beamed down in HH, but not entirely. Heidi was there, Willie as well I think, and the Thai Boxing, Lucky Lukes, and the Khatoi Show. There was also a little place behind the cabaret, where Coconuts moved in, run by a lad called Nick I think.
At that time though someone was trying to sell the site which became the Road Hole. It was pretty derelict, and looked like a vacant filling station! _________________ 'If'n ya cain't say nuth'n nice, don't say nuth'n at all' Thumper. |

| I couldn't locate the referenced article about old Hua Hin, but I do remember Hua Hin back in the old days. I was stationed in Hua Hin back in 1979 and 1980 when I was a refugee officer for the UNHCR. I was put up at the Rong Ram Rot Fai (Railway Hotel), which is the present day Sofitel Centara Grand Resort & Villas. I stayed in the room just above the switchboard, where the present day tea room and museum is. I stayed there for months and (believe it or not) hated every minute of it. At that time I couldn't wait to get back to Bangkok and the bright lights. I was the only farang for miles around and nearly died from the heat (no air). Hua Hin was just another fishing village at that time, but Vietnamese refugees had the nerve to polute the beaches, thus the UNHCR's forced presence. In truth I patrolled the beaches all the way down to the Malaysia border, but Hua Hin was pure torture because it was so close to Bangkok, yet I was stuck here. How things change. Now I have a condo here and love it. |
