I was riding my bike back from town last night at about midnight over Khao Hin Lek Fai, when about 5 or 6 other bikes roared past me. Each was 2 or 3 up containing both male and female teenagers.

At first I thought they were racing, but when I passed the viewpoint junction, there were more bikes and they were clearly arguing about something.

As I neared the bottom of the hill Soi 88 end all of the bikes had stopped completely blocking the road. I just politely asked them to move so that I could get through and drove on. There was obviously a pitched battle about to ensue, some of the kids had sticks and God knows what else.

Is this a common trend in Hua Hin? I have never seen anything like it it my 12 years in Thailand (most in Bangkok).

These kids must have been doing 60 kph plus when they overtook me and were only inches away from each other.

It was a bit scary.

I'd be interested to know if others have seen similar incidents.

I live on that road (soi 88 ) & yes, I have seen it on occasion. Not every night, by any means, but sometimes. Also a fair amount of high jinks (ie good natured mucking about) in the early hours which, nevertheless starts the soi dogs & mine (!) barking.
My personal opinion is that there are a few vendors that will sell alcohol to underage Thais in that area & that's why they congregate there. Plus you have the university at the top of 88, though I'm not sure if any of the kids come from there or not.

Quite common

I live in a quiet soi off Naebkehardt The cafe on the corner (owned by a policeman) is a regular haunt in the early hours. The kids are drunk and even squat in the middle of the road

Reminds me of my 'chicken runs' when I was young. No fear and it's a Thai trait

The police just laugh Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

We sometimes have a group of youngsters late night riding up here where we stay but its always good natured and they are all local lads. A few years ago while living up in Bangkok we stayed in Doa Kanong (spelling?) and there were large gang fights almost every Friday or Saturday. These were between rival schools and we would see the numbers of those gathered increase and the tensions build and then all hell would break loose. There would be police and parents trying to control the kids and it was not uncommon to see Mums or Dads chasing after their own kids. Weapons consisted of baseball bats, steel pipes, axes, etc, etc. There was also one death but through all this I must honestly say that the fighting was restricted to between themselves and no violence was shown towards general public.

Although not as violent, I was surprised to learn, during my ten years in Scotland, that rival schools and areas over there have the same problem. This was not something that happened in South Africa between schools as it was never an issue what school you attended. Maybe its just me who is forgetting that then was then and now is now and many years have passed.

Thought I'd add to this thread as its not all doom and gloom. Following an incident late at night last week involving my good self, a motorcycle, a bend in the road, and a canal, I encountered such a pack of teenagers.

Around 8-10 of them arrived on the scene on various tarted up scooters, without a thought 3 of them launched into the canal and proceeded to haul the submerged bike from it. Another took care of the sodden rider and asked where he lived, the convoy then proceeded home with bike and rider in tow. On arrival the grateful rider offered some soggy bank notes as a token of appreciation for the assistance but they were refused.

The following day members of the teenage pack returned to riders house and offered to take the bike to get it fixed.

Moral of the story is that the laws of physics will always win and there are many good people out there - it just seems that its easier to talk about the bad.

Hope you did not get hurt but how the hell did you get into the canal. I use that road all the time and I do not want to end up in the canal.

Easier to get the bike cleaned at home Very Happy

On the serious side I agree Buksi about the Good, Bad (and ugly!!!)

I feel very privileged to feel secure here. When the wife is away I have numerous Thai contacts make sure I'm ok and stop me going astray. If I do go astray I know there is a reliable taxi driver shadowing my every move. Ok, seems a bit imposing and of course like all Yorkshire clever heads, I know how to slip them. BUT not sure I really do

They make sure I'm home and locked in and in the morning make sure I'm up and running and during the day, make sure I'm eating well. (When the missus is away I tend to forget my routine!!)

No recompense. It's always refused and their retort is it's Bhuddas will

Ok there are rogues about but there are all over the globe

Stay civil, gain their respect and respect them regardless of class, employment status and background. They can save your life when too many sherbets have taken hold

AND contrary to general belief they are not always interested in your wallet

Sadley, this is a common happening. 'Scooter boy' and his birds are always at this sort of thing. Probably all about a girl, 20 baht or just having a bad hair day(after a bottle of Sato or something cheap but strong), so it's time to burn off some teenager hormones.
