This is getting very strange and even more sad. Pete Sad From the BBC today.

Madeleine mother 'to be suspect'

Kate McCann will be questioned as a suspect
Kate McCann - mother of missing four-year-old Madeleine - will be formally declared a suspect by the Portuguese police, the family has said.
The McCanns' spokeswoman revealed Mrs McCann will be given "arguido" status on Friday.

This would allow the police to put certain questions and give her the legal right to remain silent.

Gerry McCann is set to be questioned later. Both deny any involvement in Madeleine's disappearance on 3 May.

A member of the McCann family has described the turn of events as "unbelievable"

She is shocked and surprised in several ways... that such an accusation could be made against her.

A spokesman for the McCann family said: "Just before the session ended last night, the police made it clear they had some further questions to ask which would require her to be in arguido status rather than just witness status."

He could not confirm what these questions were, or whether Mr McCann will also be made an arguido when he reports to the police station later.

The spokesman said: "She is shocked and surprised in several ways. First of all that such an accusation could be made against her.

"And obviously she is concerned that such a line of investigation can become a distraction from further attempts to find Madeleine."

Lawyer present

Mrs McCann's brother in law John McCann said: "We just need to see what exactly is going to develop in Portugal.

"We just want to see exactly what the Portuguese Police are saying. We cannot believe the line that they are going down - we just find it unbelievable."

Mrs McCann had been interviewed before by police, but yesterday was the first time her lawyer had been present.

She was questioned as a witness until after midnight on Thursday. Police have previously said the McCanns are not suspects.

Madeleine, of Rothley, Leicestershire, disappeared from the family's holiday apartment while her parents were eating in a nearby restaurant.

In a statement released before her interview yesterday, she appealed to her daughter's abductors, saying: "It is not too late - please let her go or call the police."

She said: "We came to Portugal an ordinary family of five. We just want to know what happened on 3 May and want to be able to go home one family, reunited."

Mrs McCann will become the second formal suspect in the case. The first was Robert Murat, a British man living locally. He has not been arrested or charged.

Mrs McCann's husband Gerry is expected to be questioned on Friday about Madeleine's disappearance from an apartment in Praia da Luz, Algarve.

Blood traces

Samples, including suspected traces of blood, have been recovered from the McCanns' holiday apartment.

The UK's Forensic Science Service has spent the past month analysing them.

Madeleine was last seen on 3 May

Portuguese police spokesman Chief Inspector Olegario Sousa said partial results from tests had been received, but would give no further details.

Last week, the McCanns launched a libel action against a Portuguese newspaper which claimed they killed their daughter.

A public statement from the director of police followed, saying neither Kate nor Gerry McCann had ever been viewed as suspects.

The McCanns have travelled extensively through Europe to raise awareness of the search for their daughter.

Star News stated tonight that traces of Madeline's blood were found in a car the parents rented 25 days after the abduction.

The below was just reported by CNN 30 minutes ago. I don't see that BBC or others have picked it up yet. I only quote the first paragraph. For the entire story, go to the link, which is much of what we've already read. Pete Sad

"(CNN) -- Madeleine McCann's blood was found in a car her parents rented 25 days after they reported her disappearance, family spokeswoman Justine McGuinness told CNN......."

Sky sources have said Kate McCann could be charged with the accidental death of her daughter.

Mrs McCann's lawyer has warned her she may face charges today, said a family friend.

I have a feeling in my bones that there's a lot more to this story - from the parents' side.

The parents are hugely religious. That always arouses suspicions in my mind - don't know why. Maybe I'm being too cynical - but doesn't realism and cynicism sort of blend together? I do hope I'm wrong, but...

VS

Edited because I couldn't remember how to spell cynical!

One thing's for sure, this is the mother of all cocked up investigations! I doubt the authorities will be able to prove anything unless they find a dead body. And just were where the McCanns meant to have been hiding that body under the glare of 24 hour publicity from day one?

My initial hunch was another of those "to camera" pleas that ends with the person pleading for help being charged. Its some sort of psychological disorder and is repeated all over the world. Hence my last line on my original post here, but now, who knows?

it maybe a bit cynical but i have had that feeling of suspicion from the start with the parents, just like vs. i hope i'm wrong.
what i do find the hardest to understand is how a child can just disappear so easily without trace for such a long time & more so because it is in mainland europe.
no positive sightings, no leads, absolutely no trail to follow.
& all this with the help of cctv, the internet & worldwide press coverage.
one thing for sure is, the parents are involved somehow or the portuguese police are conducting one of the biggest & most embarassing investigations in history.
my thoughts & prayers are still for that poor little girl.

A bad statistic was published today, in that cases such as these parents are involved 73% of the time. Let's hope this is an exception. Sad Pete

that statistic is not a healthy one pete Sad
after reading all the exclusives & reports in the media it seems the facts are still no clearer.
the mc'canns are now back in the uk seeking privacy for the sake of their twins which in my opinion they should have done a while back.
are the police investigating this case for real? the accusations & procedures that have been used to date, show a high level of incompetence.
maybe as suggested, an outside force specialising in this sort of case should be brought in to review & continue the investigation?
it seems that the main point of the investigation has been lost. this little girl is still missing, so instead of surmising on what might have happened, shouldn't the focus be on finding her or god forbid, her body?

The latest.

The search for Madeleine McCann has taken a dramatic turn with a photograph taken in Morocco that could show the missing girl.
