Joe,
I think many of the expats who live here don't go to the main beach very often, if at all, normally preferring some of the nicer, quieter beaches south of the town, and probably are not aware of the extent of the problem you describe. Equally, given the short shrift the Thai authorities give farangs, and the fact that they don't really care what we think, why should we care or try to do anything about it? The only thing we should do is make sure we don't do anything to make the problem worse, by littering, and if we happen to use the services of the horses on the beach, make sure we tell the owner to pick up the poop - to be fair whenever I have seen the horses and their owners, the guy is normally carrying a bag and scoop to do just that. At least it's natural, unlike Coke cans and plastic.

jsidoti,

This theme often crops up, and I just don't understand where you guys see this mess (horse poop aside - I agree that is annoying).

When I was last in Hua Hin, I started this thread http://www.huahinafterdark.com/forum/hua-hin-to-khao-takiab-t6994.html in response to some similar criticism.

Obviously people are seeing things that I can't. Or maybe I'm visiting Hua Hin at the wrong time of year. Can somebody please produce some photographic evidence of this filthy beach? Apart from the area around the Chinese Temples and one small polluted area, the Beach at Hua Hin is as clean as any other beach I have ever seen.

Regarding Trash Cans, they're great if they are regularly emptied. However, I've been to beaches all over the world and seen the rubbish mountains that grow around them.

Sorry sightly off topic, but need necessitates. Being an ex of the 'rum bum baccy boy brigade, (no jokes please) I am reminded of an old naval saying that go's thus - Its better to have snow on the poop deck, than poop on the snow deck......Laughed my putties off when I first herd that one.... Very Happy
Sorry, just had to be said......

i can not see what the problem is with horse shit, as this will biodegrade
but when it is in plastic bags, which the cowboys just bury in sand, then the tide uncovers that is a problem,
but to me the bad guy is the one who,s job it is to clean the fishing jetty,
every day he just,s hose,s all the rubbish off the jetty into the sea, which
just ends up on the beach, lazy pom puey

How would you say the beach at Hua Hin compares to other Thai places? With all this talk of the town being quiet, I just wondered if this was another factor in people not being there?

I do know a couple who viewed the beach and the sea as dirty and cited it as a reason not to return, although they liked everything else about the place.

When I am in Hua Hin, usually 3 times a year, I walk the beach from the Market Village area to Khao Takiab and back. About the only thing I see at the waters edge is dead jelly fish and the occasional horse crap, however, most riders do pick it up and can often be seen with a bag full hanging from their stirrup.

The water is not a nice deep blue colour but I have no problems with litter/rubbish on the beach but as someone said I do not go to the busy area from the Hilton to the town so it may be different there.

Thank you Pagey, at least I'm not the only one not to see the rubbish.

If this rubbish is so prevalent, will somebody please put up, or shut up - where is the photographic evidence?

The beach going north from Regent Holiday Inn or Veranda Resort (about midway between HH and Cha Am) is very clean and pleasant to walk. A bit steep at high tide but really great at low tide. There is no rubbish as the locals clean it pretty regular.

Sometimes the lads with the horses don't stop to clean up the horse shite. In general the beach is pretty clean.

The thing that bugged me most the last time I was in Hua Hin 6-7 weeks ago was the fact that the number of hawkers on the beach seems to have trebled. Also, I like my icecream, but the prices they charge are excessive.

I visited Pattaya for the first time (maybe last time as well), the ice cream was half the price than in Hua Hin on the beach.
