Would you believe I've been in Thailand over 4 years and have never seen it except on TV! I've decided to do a piece for my blog and need some pics, so my question is - Which is best, the boxing garden or the grand? I suppose I need to know which is the best for photo opportunities. Many thanks in advance... _________________ Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly!

Randy
the Garden, whilst it states the fights are not exhibitions seems a lot more " controlled" than the Grand....there it seems a lot more real (I speak as an Aikido man used to giving much respect to Muay Thai guys....), The Garden is more tourist orientated as far as I see .....
If you want real real Muay Thai I would suggest Lumphini in BKK or the other main arena...(cant remember its name).....there they hold the bigger matches so as a photographer you can get all the mania of the punters and side betting as well as the fight ...always a great photo opportunity.
Here in HH go for the Grand....as a photo op try a night when they have one "junior" match with the young kids and catch em going into the ring or their parents reactions.,,,pure photo magic.
Then post them here as well as the blog....love your stuff mate!

When I was first returning to Thailand (first visit was '65) in 89, I saw a bout on Thai TV where the fighters were fighting without gloves .. just bound hands .. no resin and glass, however.
They had 2 referees in the ring .. and not one bout went the distance. I only saw it that one time then couldn't find it again. A Thai fried told me they were not allowed to show it any more.
I would love to find a venue where they still fight that way. 'Course, they might not allow cameras .. |

That would have been unusual in those days as, according to The Lonely Planet", after a ten year ban on the sport in the 1920s, it was reintroduced some time in the '30s, but with the fighters having to wear gloves. (Mind you, TLP has been known to get things wrong before).
Must have been a "prize fight" that got through the "tv net". _________________ "I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars - the rest I just squandered". George Best. |

From what I heard, it had not been so unusual up to that point. Perhaps you know better? Not sure if the televised bout was a one-off. It was for me, not my Thai friend.
"Thailand according to Lonely Planet" .. I shudder at the thought. Visit Thorn Tree sometimes. Tourists misinforming wannabe tourists about Bankok, Thialand and the exchange rate of the bath .. all punctuated by the brags and egos of repeat offenders.
One could in Baitong in Chiang Rai in those days and watch tour guidebook writers asking questions of the bartender and any expats who would give information .. while he sucked down beer Sing' and created his literary masterpieces.
Do you actually believe that all those folks writing those tour books .. and articles for travel websites .. actually go and experience all those things and places? |

I certainly don't believe all I read in LP etc. I've seen enough of the "writers" in Thailand who straight off claim to a bar/restaurant/guesthouse that they're from LP hoping for a freebie. Don't think a genuine writer would announce the fact.
But we digress. I bet there's still plenty of "bare knuckle" Muay Thai going on. Maybe you've just got to look for it a bit harder these days and not on TV? _________________ "I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars - the rest I just squandered". George Best. |

The movie is Kickboxer with Jean Claude Van Damm. There's a classic scene in a bar where JC gets drunk on Sang Song and does an incredible dance:

Check out those snake hips!
That's dancing! |

I would guess that they might be by invitation only, and that a certain amount of "gaming" might be going on as well.
I think the 2 referees is a holdover from the days when Thai vs Burmese fights were common.
Here's another tidbit from the Chula fine arts department .. second hand. The "galare", so common in Lanna, was actually used as a "territory" marker by Burmese warriors .. to mark houses they had conquered. Odd how it was adopted by northern Thais. |
