The paper this morning had a bit about this. Some guy went to Phuket, could only get a wireless signal in the hotel lobby so went to his room and used his cell phone. He got 80KPS using DTAC, which a hell of a lot better than dial up.
Making some assumptions. First, you need a good package of free time or unlimited calling from your cell phone operator.
Second, he mentions he bought something called a "Solomon SEGM-520 EDGE modem..." Doesn't your cell phone act as the needed modem when you connect it to your computer via USB?
Any other tips on this method of connection appreciated. Pete _________________ "What America needs is a huge hypodermic needle of morality." Alice Cooper 21 Sept. 2007 |

i have used a mobile phone connection on a laptop in thai. it is surprisingly cheap but its only 512mb connection.
most modern mobile phones have the modem built in, i have used a samsung & a nokia on my travels.
havent heard of the solomon but there are so many new devices coming on the market at the moment that its hard to keep track. wireless seems to be the best way forward & one i have invested in. _________________ when all are one & one is all, to be a rock & not to roll. |

When using a cell phone in connection with a lap top; is there any free internet provider in Thailand?
If so, what telephone number do you use? _________________ I intend to live forever -- so far, so good. |

The best 2 words to Mobile Phone Computing= Nokia E61
Since I got this phone it eased my travelling more. I have to monitor my own 11 dedicated hosting servers 24/7.
It's got all the possible connection types available built-in. Plus a full QWERTY keyboard and cut/copy/paste. Opens and creates all types of Office Documents as well as PDF files and there is no limit how much memory you can add.
Obviously the best connection is Wi-fi. Here is an example of a good and free usage of this great phone.
When I was on holiday in Penang, went to a Cafe which had a wireless connection, started the Skype and talked to my customers and friends from different parts of the world through the wi-fi and only paid for the ice-coffee.
As long as you have open wireless connections around you it doesn't cost anything to connect. Since most of the latest model laptops have wi-fi built in that works the same, but if you have a laptop like mine, 17" screen and more than 4 kilos in weight, this phone makes it more mobile than any laptop or mobile phone.
It supports the following connection types:
Edge/GPRS
WCDMA (3G)
WLAN (Wireless LAN wi-fi)
Bluetooth
USB Connection
Visit http://europe.nokia.com/A4142101. The list price is 16,500 Baht. _________________ Say mai penrai live longer! |

Thank you webmaster, but I still want that tel. number.
During the tzunami disaster I had to call a European internet provider to get access to the internet.

If I understand you correctly, you want to use your mobile phone as a modem attached to your PC/Laptop to connect to the Internet.
If that's the case, then you have to call your service provider (AIS/DTAC/True/Hutch) service centre and tell them your mobile phone make and model, then they will send you an installation SMS, which you have to save&install on your mobile.
In mobile technology it's not like the normal phones, the connection is called "on demand", which means there is no dialling, no hand shake (like normal modem) or authentication, but the phone has to be set up with that installation SMS prior to your connection demand.
I hope this helps. _________________ Say mai penrai live longer! |

This is something I had never really considered before, but it has aroused an interest in my digital loins. I have a Nokia 7610 on the DTAC network, which has web facilities which I sometimes use for the odd google search, but it can be a bit slow. Are you saying that I can use my phone to connect to the internet in Hua Hin for a reasonable price? I cant see it being cheaper than the Hutch set up (1000 bht a month) I am normally on line 3 -4 hours a day.
If a change of phone would help I may consider it..... _________________ Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly!

You need a interface data cable (usb on one side - your specific cellphone contact on the other side).
No problem to buy this interface in Hua Hin.
GPRS is slow and I don't think it's a cheap way of communication.
It's more a backup thing when the normal net is down or you're on holiday in Issan. _________________ I intend to live forever -- so far, so good. |

FYI, house has had no phone line since Friday. I'm now connected using my Nokia N76. Seems the cost of call and connection through AIS network is 1.4 Baht per minute. I have a speed of 500kps so I'm not complaining. This is a goo back up way to connect when needed. Pete _________________ "What America needs is a huge hypodermic needle of morality." you are right pete, as i said it is a cheap way to connect although being slow at times, its better than nothing. if you are on pay as you
go, which is the mainstream in thai, there is no need to do anything other than to connect, providing your phone has a modem. _________________ when all are one & one is all, to be a rock & not to roll. |

Thanks RZR. For a variety of reasons, both my partner and I need to switch back to postpaid, probably Dtac rather than AIS.
Are you saying above that the procedures for post paid vs prepaid are different when you connect to the internet through a cell phone modem? Pete _________________ "What America needs is a huge hypodermic needle of morality." Alice Cooper 21 Sept. 2007 |

pete,as long as your mobile phone has a modem, you can connect it to the laptop by simply plugging into a usb port.the charges should be pretty similar. it doesnt matter whether your phone is pay as you go or contract. the only difference is the way you pay. _________________ when all are one & one is all, to be a rock & not to roll. |

I have been using a Samsung linked to my laptop and a DTAC unlimited usage acct at 900bht per month for two months
I get 115kbs speed out of it - not blistering but fast enough to work and send mails....just no film downloads
It works in all but real backwoods areas where there is sod all mobile coverage at all
Getting TT&T connected tomorrow but will keep the DTAC acct running as I move about a lot....
Its workable and cost effective (sort of) |
