Stamford International University is hosting some Microsoft representatives from Bangkok to talk about their new Silverlight presentation environment. The public is welcome to attend. Here are the details:

Microsoft Presentation & Demonstration
Silverlight and Windows Presentation Foundation
10:30 – 11:45am, Tuesday, 1 April, 2008, Room 302

Join us for a session with K. Fukiat Julnual, Microsoft Academic Developer Evangelist for Thailand, and K. Jirawat Padungkijjanont, ISV Developer & Platform Evangelist, about the media-rich next-generation of user interfaces and how to create them with Microsoft tools.

Silverlight: a browser plugin that allows web applications to be developed with features like animation, vector graphics, and audio-video playback – features that characterize a rich Internet application.

Windows Presentation Foundation: a radical departure from the established way of building Windows-based applications. It offers significant advances in graphical capabilities and has a huge impact on how application UI’s are built.

Have read up a little on Silverlight and it looks impressive, I do think Thailand has to get its finger out with regards to international internet connectivity though if it wants to entertain these technologies.

I tried the plug-in this week on Apple's Safari browser: it works fine...thumbs up

Evangelists?
Curious use of a word which I have only ever seen in a religious context.

Not really... In the late 80's, Guy Kawasaki was known as being Apple's evangelist.

An evangelist is an employee whose job is to promote his company products primarily by working with third-party developers. (Wikipepia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_evangelist)

It was the third and last meaning in the dictionary I checked and I'd say in general usage well behind the first two "Christian" meanings. But I am not given to reading stuff about technology, computer programs and the like and I just have never come across it used like this before. Even reading your link I am having "Yikes!" reactions as I have no positive feelings about this word whatsoever.

To return to the topic here, I seriously doubt Stamford will profit from it in any way ( charging rent for the room perhaps?) Understudy, you know the place as well as I do. . what do YOU think?

First I have heard of Silverlight too. Have to look into it.

Hello there everybody and you CHas!

Welll I'm sure Microsofts Presentation of it's Silverlight is something that should be looked forward to but What's wondersme about this is that it happens @ our old place Stanford Univ. way inside Palm Hills. and @actual student class hours.
I can remmeber that during my study years we had a couple of those in in class hours presetations and Lectures by Guest Lecturers ect. All of them happened during 2001 and 2003 (the better years) I was @ one of those special Lectrure classes, One other Presentation I wanted to attend but could not cause of conflict with my Major. The last one I remember vaguely was highly anticipated but a No show by the organisers.
Usually those Presentations are being held on weekends when most of the studs are in Bangkok or elsewhere. Little exposure to students then.
( believe some of stamfords Comp scinece faculty had things to do wtih it. but it could well be a No show by the Presenters just as last time.
I would urge everybody that's interested please go there and witness the event. fi many people come it will be success and if it's a no show Stamfrod will loose face! What I don't hope. I'm sure Comp. science studs will have "Shot Gun" seats.

Your's the understudy!!!

First, I guess I'm such a propeller-head, I didn't give the word "evangelist" a second thought. It's an official job title at Microsoft, sort of a more passionate version of a "representative."

To answer the questions about Stamford Int'l. University and their hosting of the Microsoft event, it's all paid for by Microsoft (except for the refreshments provided by STIU). Microsoft's academic evangelists make regular visits to universities to give presentations and workshops on their technologies to students and other interested people. Not a sales pitch, more a tutorial demonstration. They will even bring some prizes. There will surely be some schedule conflicts with classes, but it seems most computer science students will have that time slot free to attend.

A no-show is not likely - I met one of the speakers at last week's Microsoft launch event for Visual Studio 2008 and Windows Server 2008 in Bangkok, and they're taking advantage of the trip by making it a family holiday in Hua Hin this weekend.

Hope to see some HHAD folks there, too!

Sorry you guts Sorry I won't be there @ Stamford I'm here in L. A. gauging the mood of Americans in the mids of a resession caused a massive Credit crisis.

I forgot to mention there will be prizes (logo items), refreshments, and the opportunity to let Stamford administration know if there are other tech interests or training they can provide the community at large.

Hope to see some HHADians tomorrow (1 apr, 10:30 - 11:45, Stamford Int'l. University, Room 302).

I don't know if there were any HHAD folks there - about 30 people showed up, and it was an interesting presentation. Not technical, more of a gee-whiz look at where user interfaces are headed (cover flow, lots of expanding/contracting buttons, video, etc.). Good presenters, too, they had a lot more to show, but they stuck to the schedule.

I think Stamford folks want to host more events like this, and I'll post the announcements when they do.
