Fa choose McClaren next England manager, deal is four years. He start August 1 and first international match is August 16 match with Greece at Old Trafford.

FA had hoped to Scolari, but the Brazilian rejected the chance to manage England. For me is good that Three Lions is English manager not foreign.

Good luck Steve!

England need more than a manager they need players with a bit of passion for the game who care less about being prima donnas and money grabbers want to wear the shirt with pride and fight for each other till the end. Just a pity that the Irish ain't there :-)

McLaren was always the obvious choice from the FA as he was already involved in the England setup. Unfortunately I think it is one of the worst choices they could have made as it looks likely that he will continue in the same way as SGE - always playing 4-4-2, mostly overlooking players deserving a chance at 'unfashionable' clubs or those not in the top flight/playing European football, sticking by under performing big names regardless of better options, always leaving needed tactical substitutions until it is too late, taking gambles on injured players going into major tournaments etc etc. The thing we won't get with McLaren will be scandals for the NOTW and The Scum (sorry Sun) to feed off, which I suppose is a good thing. The other similarity is that once again England will not win either the 2010 World Cup or Euro 2008. Still, at least he's English....and he's not Allardyce!

P.S. I'll bet Stuart Downing is jumping for joy! And I genuinely hope that SM proves me wrong and is the most successful, dynamic and courageous manager England have ever had. Should have been Curbishley though...

McLaren English???? Maybe for a generation or so. Laren is the Celtic form of Lawrence. So yet another foreigner running the England team of Terry, Gereard, Lampard and the injured pikey.

As for the very shrewd Alan Curbishley, He was offered the job last year but declined on the basis that he was more suited to managing a football team and would stay where he was where he may have a chance of winning something.

How do they expect a manager from a 2nd rate team, whose best achievement is to get to the final of the European Losers Cup, to lead our nation to victory in 2010?

I seem to remember his current set of loyal supporters screaming for his head earlier this season.

If you don't set your sights high enough from the outset, you can't expect to succeed

Great appointment! Most successful manager in Boro history (1 trophy in over 100 years), what more do you Englanders want? I think Bryan Robson should be his number 2 with Bobby Gould as his international advisor. It's the dream team!

Tee hee. Well Bobby is certainly able to advise on how to cope with impending international failure.....

Not technically correct - I think you'll find that Boro were only formed in about 1986 after the original set up went bankrupt. Therefore he's actually better than stated - 1 trophy in 20 years, plus getting to the final of the European Losers Cup.

Maybe I'll start supporting tiddlywinks!
