Does anyone have any reliable info on work permit and long term visa requirements and costs for Malaysia?

I have looked at their immigration website: www.imi.gov.my which is about as useful as any other government website.

Have also looked at their 2nd Home program: http://mm2h.motour.gov.my but this requires an investment of 3 million baht and forbids working.

I know this is probably the wrong place to ask but maybe some HHAD members have or still work and live there.

Buksida

I aint an expert by any way but I’m a Brit working in Malaysia.

MMSH has changed again, the money sum has dropped a bit but its always been the same that if your have a work visa (expat card its called here) you cant enter into MMSH. I attempted to get into MMSH but was refused on that grounds, its more geared towards retired people. If you come here on MMSH and get a job you loose all privileges of the MMSH, just guessing from a previous post but I think you said you were about 30 so its probably not the best way to consider coming here as you would loose privileges if you started working

Work Visa = Most people come here sponsored by a international companys, I’ve heard of a few people coming here and applying for Expat card and been successful and went onto do Teaching, IT jobs, Oil & Gas work, consultants etc

Business Visa = most expats that never came sponsored with a international companies useally go into business which is a pretty easy way of coming here as the Government is keen for that type of expat also, don’t need a Malaysian partner, some business’s get preferential treatment if they have a MALAY (Muslim) partner in certain business sectors but that pretty much the Oil and Gas industry. I’ve got a heap of mates living here that way and its super easy to arrange

Its beer O clock and I need to go but feel free to ask anything you want to no in detail and I’ll try my best to get you a good answer

cheers

I'm going for a beer after work with my mate who came here and set up a furniture export company, let me speak with him and i'll get back to you as he here on a buisness visa.

i see you ask about costs also, its a little bit more exspenisve than Thailand but not that much more, booze is pretty heavy taxed but it is a muslim country but if you dont drink in the western pubs and stick to the local joints its not bad, standard local joint is 24 RM for a Jug (24 RM being 240 Baht a jug being 2 pints)

The also just change house laws last month and a expat can buy any amount of houses he / she wants nowadays as long as its not low cost houses that were built for the locals which is fair in my book.

as i say feel free to ask anything, i've gleemed heaps of info from this website about HH to which you've helped out before to me

cheers

Thanks again, yes any info on starting a biz with visa and wp appreciated.

Not bothered about beer prices in bars as I rarely go out these days, would be interested in details on schools though.

The property thing is also very interesting ...

Heaps of international schools here in KL (think 14) and a heap of pre school schools also

Penang also have a few, (think 5)

Not so sure about the other towns as don’t really no anyone there

These schools needless to say are private run and cost anything from a 6000 RM (60,000 Baht) per year to 70,000 RM (700,000Baht) top school being dearest which is Alice Smith school which was in the top ten in the world last year for results. Pre schools are loads cheaper, normally about 2,000 RM (20,000 Baht) per year

In the local schools which are free but they teach in Malay and English which would make it a bit hard for your kids to start off with.

All the international schools education system apart from the 2 American schools is based on the British system.

Property = I do have a place in HH which is great but without getting into any debates here it is 100% legal to own being an expat and it dose make a difference even if its just in my mind, I’m in the middle of building a place here right now and it was just the same has going through the process back in the UK (I think your from the UK?) with regards to lawyers / planning permission etc. also you can get mortgages here to 65% of house price if you want one..same process has applying back home, some banks now offering 70% to expats

I had some beers with my mate last night and in simple term’s you just go along register a company which costs 2500RM (25,000 Baht) once you company registered then you just apply for Business Visa.

He reckons setting up the company took him about 1 hours, applying for the business visa 4 - 5 weeks

As long as your not setting up a company for Oil & Gas services, Rubber, Finance services they will allow on the spot as long has you have the correct support documents which is seemingly just passport, company name, company profile, address and your 2500RM

You then just apply for the visa as director of the company and that’s it

all in all not bad at all

If you’re a Brit you can come here for 90 days and sort things out in that time frame

Even the school prices and cost of living is slightly more than HH but salarys are higher here

Thanks for the info, sounds much easier and more accommodating than here, will investigate further in a couple of months if I go down there for a while.

Thanks a lot for all that thought-provoking info on Malaysia, guys. I have been considering moving south for some time now (the Immigration move really put the tinhat on it) but my other half still seemed loyal to HH (she's not Thai). However, this topic has made her seriously consider checking out prospects down there.

If you get any more info on this subject, please do share it! Wink

Thanks again! Cheers
