I find this attempt to be funny very offensive and not funny at all.
It is discriminatory against both gay people and recovering alcoholics of which I know quite a few here in Hua Hin.
This forum has hitherto appeared open and welcoming to all and in a land where people tend to "live and let live" with regards to sexual matters and personal habits I wonder why this post has been made and allowed.
If HHAD is indeed a discriminatory organization on any basis (other than being a troll?) then I really dont want to be here. |
And there was me thinking that this reply was an upright jokey response to farang - but from subsequent replies, no?
I think farang was (mis?)quoting an old Monty Python sketch!
I haven't left the UK yet, but it seems like I'll be heading from one PC scared to open my gob country to another mini-haven of one.
Okay, it wasn't subtle, but it was clearly intended as a joke!
Recovering alcoholics in Hua Hin indeed! _________________ I know nothing |

Caller I was thinking the same thing, but could not remember where I had heard it before.
It was in the original Monty Python i think. Never raised any eyebrows then, so cannot see any reason for it to change now.
These days I think people are to quick to jump on anything that is said in jest and then try and make a big PC issue out of it.
Just take the comments in the manner that they were supposed to be taken in, and try and not make an issue out of something that is obviously not there.
Far to may tree huggers and do gooders in the world, we do not need any more

Monty Python is on constant re-run on Sky over here in Frangland at the moment. I saw the sketch in question only last week. It is very racist in that it is a dated stereotypic view of Australians as lager-addicted homophobes through the example of an Englishman being seconded to the philosphy department of an Australian university. All the Australian characters are also called Bruce. This causes confusion as Terry Jones' character's name is Michael.
Farang's misquote is aimed at neither poofters nor alcoholics, but Australians.
lol

I happen to really like Monty python! A great fan actually, though I dont remember the skit in question.
This forum however is not a Monty Python skit.. nor is life.
Without the context of involving Australians etc, such quotes and attitudes have the power to hurt and they do. The original quote has nothing to indicate it is meant in jest.
People who complain about "too much PC" in his world are never those affected by it. Living in another culture ought to make a person more sensitive to the way in which various minorities are treated by the majority and not less sensitive.
I am not lying. I DO know recovering alcoholics in Hua Hin and one is a very close friend. |

oh, and if you're Australian, gay (or maybe just a bit curious) or have a drink dependency then please take this as warning that if you have no sense of humour you will find this deeply offensive so don't read it. _________________ ดวงขึ้น

Chas,
I am certain there was no malice behind Farang's words. It was just a joke, albeit perhaps in poor taste.
On a personal aside (not moddy), I think we have to sometimes take things written on forums with a pinch of salt. We don't know the other posters (often), we don't know their sense of humour, whether they are posting under the influence etc.
I'm involved in 3 Thai fora, this by far, being the most genteel. On all, I am in the minority, being a woman. Here I've virtually always been treated with the utmost respect (apart from the odd troll). On the others I've been called every name imaginable. I've been everything from a militant feminist, to a misandrist, to (yesterday) an "ugly old slapper" (this by someone who has actually met me!). I've been told my husband should be neutered so as not to produce any offspring with my genes, as well.
If I took every insult seriously, I'd never post again. As it is, I win a lot of brownie points by laughing it off & turning the tables humorously on my attacker. That's just my personal take on participating in internet fora if you're a minority group.
Having said all that, I reiterate my original point. I know Farang will not have meant his comments to be anything but a joke. _________________ "The question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk? But, can they suffer?" - Jeremy Bentham, philosopher, 1748-1832

Chas,
Better not take him to JW's tomorrow night then!
All that was said was "no sober people", it was you that then made a connection to this being insulting to recovering alcoholics - no-one else, and with respect, that's a big jump.
I am always wary when I here, "some of my best friends are", still I'm sure you're genuine.
All the best,
