Above sometimes spelled Koh Samet. Located off the coast of Rayong Province, near Bahn Pae. Used to be a backpackers heaven and haven. I last stayed there in the late 80's and got bed bug bites in a 200 baht a night bungalow. Those days are over and cheap digs gone. Check out below link. Especially note the RATE icon and look at the first two of the four resorts listed. I'm really not sure this is still Thailand we are in? Pete

Only 8500 for a meal and 6000 for your boat transfer though. |

Yeah, I saw that also...LOL. I think we may have found an island that is more expensive than anything on Phuket. I hope they're happy with their record when no guests show up, or perhaps an Angela Joliee (sp) and Brad Pitt from time to time. Pete
PS: For thsoe not familiar, the boat transfer from mainland (Ban Phae) to Koh Samet south side where these places are is about 2 nautical miles. 15 minutes at most in a speed boat. That's 400 Baht a minute, enjoy the trip!? |

Not forgetting the "free" drink on arrival. Lucky people.

Seems to be on par with the complex in Phuket that includes 5 x 5star propertys Inc the Sheraton Laguna.
My GF went to Koh Samet about 2 monts ago and said that it was a bit like Phi Phi island before the Tsunami. Lots of cheaper reasonable priced accomodation as well, but still very laid back.
I think it is a bit like most of the islands around Thailand have this type of set up. You can pay what you can afford, if you want a cheaper holiday you can do it OK, and if you want to large it up in a really flash joint, you can also do that.
Pete, I remeber going to Railey beach in Phuket, and there is a place there called the Raavadee Resort. It is on the same beach as all of the cheaper places, not all that secluded from the day trippers, but does have guards to keep the day trippers out of there.
This particular beach is only accessable by either long boat or speed boat, I have just checked their website and the most expensive room available over xmas and new year is 135,000baht a day ($3752 USD). I can only ever dream about staying in a place like that, who knows, I might win the lottery one day and be able to go.
With places like that, other than the facilities in the complex, you still have to use the same beach, shops & bars on the island as everyone else, and that is the thing that I like the most about a lot of the islands around Thailand, you can have the best of both worlds most of the time.

Yes, the resorts are very pricey, but they look absolutely gorgeous! I'm probably going to upset a lot of Thailand purists here, but if I had the spare time & the money, I'd definitely book in for a few days R&R. A wooden hut in Isaan may be the authentic Thai experience, but for pampering, this looks wonderful! _________________ "The question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk? Dawn, I am with you on that, we normally have a pretty mixed holiday when it come to accomodation, but always try and spend the last two or three days hold up in somewhere a bit more pricey to just finish the holiday off feeling as though you have had a holiday.
If you tend to do a fair bit of travelling while you are away, it is always nice to put your feet up and be waited on hand and foot for a few days. There is no better feeling.

chelsea,
Just a small correction for those people who are in or going to Phuket; Railay beach is just near Krabi and is not part of Phuket! It is accessible (or was when I was last there) as you say only by longtail boat from Krabi town, and also I think from Ao Nang beach to the west of Krabi, where you can also get boats to Ko Phi Phi and other islands. I have never been to Phuket so don't know if you can go to Railay from there, but I would doubt it. Well worth a visit though, especially for anyone into rock climbing, but mainly for a nice chilled out stay. |

Wanderlust, you are so right I stand corrected. You can all see why I did not pass Geography at school.
We actually stayed at Ao Nang and went accross on the long tail boat to Raily beach. Cannot be sure if there is any other way of accessing (other than speedboat).
Again appologies for my mistake in the original post. Good job my GF is a travel agent, god knows where I would end up.

| just got back from thailand (my second trip) i did spend four days at koh samet, with my thai GF, we got a bus from bangkok, return tickets including boat for two if I remember correctly, under 500 baht, we were shown a bungalow for 1,500 per night, but took another for 800, this was fine, eating and drinking out every night 2,000 per night, so not to expensive, dont know if I have jumped in on this thread missing somethin but thought I would let you know of my experience, it was a great place and I look forward to going back |
