I recently adopted stray kitten that arrived on my doorstep on December 1st. I took her in and had her de-wormed, shots, and neutered. She has now had 3 doses of liquid worm medicine and this morning she is still passing tapeworms. I am talking multiple worms of 24+inches. Does anyone know how long it takes to get a cat worm free? I must say the elimination of the worms has been messy, smelly and gross

How sad for the poor kitten. Cats are such clean animals that it must be causing her much distress. I hope it is resolved soon....

Are you sure you're giving the correct wormer for that type of worm? Many wormers (even multi-wormers) aren't effective for all types of worms. With pups we do a general de-worming & then a more specific one if other worms 'turn up'.

Either take the kitten to a good vet (Hua Hin Veterinary Hospital - as on this site or Pet Hospital Soi 55/1 are both good) or go yourself & describe the worm & get a case-specific wormer for her. Good luck.

Thanks Dawn. I will take her to one of the vets you recommend. I took her to a Vet in Cha-Am and he gave her a yellow liquid that was for multi worms. We took her in the first time she was passing the worms as they were very long and she did not seem able to completly pass them. At that time he assisted in removing them and gave her another dose of the medicine. When we took her in to be neutered she has passed more worms so he have us a syringe with the medicine to give her the next day after neutering. So she has now had three doses of medicine and passed very long tapeworms three time.

I'm not saying anything about the vet you went to, as I don't know who it is, but anyone can set themselves up as a vet here. Sometimes the certificates you see on the walls are for vet technician courses, sometimes there is no qualification at all. I've heard many horror stories & experienced at least two cases with our dogs & different vets.

Your vet may be giving the right medicine, but the kitten just has a very bad case, or it might not be the right medicine for these worms (horrible, aren't they? Sad ) Either way, it won't hurt to get a second opinion & I can vouch for those vets as being qualified & good. Smile

Dawn I just got back from the Pet Hospital on Soi 55/1. After talking to the Vet there, it seems that the medicine we were getting was for hookworm and round worm. He said that it would not take care of the tapeworm. So we just got back and I gave her the 1/4 tablet and see how it goes now. I must say the tapeworms are really not for the queasy.

We will now be using the vet at the Pet Hospital from now on.

Other than that problem she really is quite a nice kitten. Friendly, playful and a lot of company.

Hopefully that will sort it. I'm glad & I'm sure you & kitty will breathe a sigh of relief when those things are gone! Very Happy

Strongent is a great worm med. not sure they use it here in Thailand, but follow Dawn's advice, and it sounds like you did, you kitty will be fine soon. Give her a good life, she'll return to you much love & happiness.
One suggestion keep her as an indoor cat, it is a much better - safer way for the kitty, life on the outside can be full of misadventures, and short term living.
Only my thoughts though-
