I just did a search on the HHAD forums here and came up empty. (The last post on a relevant forum was my own asking this same question!)

Can anyone recommend a decent insurance company here in Hua Hin?

I need accident insurance ( health insurance is out of the question)
and homeowners insurance and a single company that handles both would be nice. ( We do have excellent insurance on the car)

I know that there are many factors that need to be balanced against taking on a premium here including the comparatively reasonable cost of health care as well as the lower cost of replacing stuff or repairing damage in the home, but I DO want to find a company to at least discuss this with and see what a modest plan might set me back and whether it would be worth it.

Anybody have any recommendations?

Try doing a www search for insurance in Thailand. I think that all of the companies doing insurance here are foreign, mostly British, Japanese and American.

They will have websites and may advertise their Thailand operations on the sites. Worth a try.

Insurance is a minefield anywhere. Here in Thailand where few understand it and most don't see the need for it, I don't think you have an easy task.

If you do find an agent the policy will be written in Thai so you won't know what type of accidents you covered for. If you only need RTA accident coverage you motor insure should have supplied this if they are any good. If you do find domestic accident insurance you can almost guarantee it will not cover the things that are likely to happen like tripping over dodgy tiling or getting electrocuted. That would be your fault.

As for home contents and building insurance is concerned, you will need to look at the quote and calculate how much you could buy with other methods of security such as alarms and surveillance cameras.

IMHO all insurance is legitimized fraud.

I have just purchased house insurance (contents and buildings). The policy is through Zurich and its extremelly comprehensive.

They have an agent in Hua Hin (he used to work for them in the UK for years) and he arranged everything for me.

If you are interested, PM me with your name and phone number and I will ask him to contact you.

We have been using Khun Lott with AIA for a couple of years. He is very responsive, and the rates are good. He handles all lines of insurance, and has even helped us through some "builder" difficulties by referring us to some very helpful people in the government. He has offices here and in Bangkok.

His Hua Hin office is on Petchkasem across from the King's Palace; there is a red and white AIA sign above his office.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I am going to check out a few of these later in the week.

The thing is, I have to agree with Guess that it is a minefield and a form of legitimized fraud, and quite possibly, all things considered, a waste of money. I don't have anything now ( apart from the comprehensive car insurance) and am not losing sleep over that fact. I have gone for long stretches of my life without any coverage of any sort for anything. But as I age, it seems that it might be a good idea to have some help at times.

Of course insurance companies abound!! ( My spouse even worked for one for a while) It is a moneymaking racket after all and one of the best ever invented.

But what I need to find is a GOOD company and that is why I am not doing a search on thaivisa etc. You cant tell about any of them without talking to their current clients . . people who are happy with them or perhaps unhappy. (That is why I am asking you guys and gals and NOT reading brochures and calling up agents.)

I would like to do this in an office, face to face with an agent and would expect nice friendly people to deal with, everything at least carefully explained in English if the actual documents are not in English, decent quotes for coverage and most important of all of course excellent, prompt, courteous treatment when something happens and I make a claim.

The last and most important item of all is something the insurance company just can not tell you. . or if they do, you would tend to be skeptical. ( Oh yes, we are just wonderful at paying out on claims!)

Anyway, thanks for all the input here. I will keep you posted on what I find out.

You really cannot give an average price as they are all dependant on house rebuild cost, content cost etc.
I agree that insurance always seems expensive and they try to wriggle out of claims but I really cant agree about legitimised fraud.
Ok if its that bad dont bother.
Some of us would rather pay out some cash for peace of mind whilst bieng aware of any insurance companies limitations.
Remember that like banks, insurance companies are not charities and are there to make money

Of course you can give an average price.

Insurance companies work on the laws of average, despite the variables.

Doggie asked for a price for a 3 bed villa. Any takers.
