Supoj and Ratchapol through to semis

Thepchaiya Un-nooh's brilliant run in the Hua Hin Cup came to an end when he was edged 4-3 by reigning national champion Supoj Saenla in the quarter-finals yesterday.

Thepchaiya had potted the last black in the deciding seventh frame, but then to his chagrin the cue ball disappeared into a pocket, forcing him to concede seven penalty points and the match. It was a close encounter of the opening event of the SangSom Thailand Professional Circuit during which three frames were decided on the black ball.

Supoj and Thepchaiya had last met in the final of the national championship in Yasothorn last year, when the former had rallied from the brink of defeat only to go down 5-4 in the end. This time round, Supoj fought back from 3-1 down before striking it lucky in the close seventh frame to enter the semi-finals.

Supoj, the 2007 Asian champion who is currently playing on the world professional Main Tour, takes on the winner of last night quarter-final Atthasit Mahitthi and Phaithoon Phonbun this afternoon.

Earlier, Thai hero Ratchapol Pu-Ob-Orm was impressive once again yesterday, but his first litmus test of the event comes this afternoon when he takes on talented Chinese professional Liu Song in the semi-finals.

Ratchapol, as expected, handed a 4-0 rout to Surathep Phoochalam in the quarter-finals. However, whatever Ratchapol has achieved so far in the tournament will be of little consequence when he clashes with Liu Song in the semi-finals at the Hua Hin Grand Hotel.

Ratchapol, with luck on his side, has had easy outings so far, scoring comfortable victories over Thawat Sujaritthurakarn and Praprut Chaithanasakul before mauling Surathep.

Talented Chinese professional Liu Song routed reigning national champion Supoj Saenla 5-1 to lift the Hua Hin Cup yesterday. The tournament was the first event on the SangSom Thailand Professional Circuit.

Liu Song is a former world u-21 runner-up and is now up to No. 51 in the world professional rankings.

He received the trophy from Bongkarn Limpaphan, Deputy Governor of Prachuab Khiri Khan province, the victory at the Hua Hin Grand Hotel was a result of hard work.

Liu Song won 100,000 baht, while Supoj received 50,000 baht for finishing second in the tournament, which was sponsored by CAT Telecom and the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Phaithoon received 15,000 baht for scoring the highest break of the event, a 136-point run recorded in the semifinal against Supoj on Saturday evening.

The final stage of second event will be held at the Khum Suphan Hotel in Suphan Buri province on May 6-11.
