With the recent events in Myanmar. I was wondering what the insurance companies cover here in the LOS? Flood, Earth quake, Fire, Thieft Cyclone? It just dawned on me we don't have insurance on our new house. _________________ Why is it called 'after dark' when it really is 'after light'? |

good point, how many people know what their insurance covers or doesnt as the case probably is. i certainly don't
i did look at storm damage before as relevant and ours covers storm/wind/rain damage to external parts of the house, but only includes internal house IF it is caused by ingress after roof or walls blowing off/down
doesnt mention tornados/cyclones/typhoons etc, covered under 'storm' ?
bet these come under the normal exclusion of force majure 'greater force', you can see it cant you, yeah we said we'd cover you for 'storms' but a cylclone is a 'greater force' !!
also it says flooding is not covered, can see their point as proper drainange should stop this occurance. if a massive flood then must have been from a 'greater force' like a 'monster flood' or a 'mother flood'

we are coverd for everything above plus planes, trucks, buffalo, and elephants crashing through our house. We have insurance through the Bangkok Bank in Prasat Surin, we were offered 1 to 5 years but settled for a 2 year policy at a cost of £80.00 sterling we had to supply some photos, all in all very reasonable price. |

But the real test comes when it's time to pay out! Anyone had to claim on their house insurance (for damage)? _________________ Never argue with a man carrying a water buffalo... |

| Not for damage, but I know how poorly they pay for theft! So it's probibly not worth the paper it is written on! |

When buying insurance in Thailand, trust some small office or the big bank, you have to go with some company.I dont trust any insurance company in the uk all sh*t houses, on my last planned trip to LOS one week before traveling my father past away suddenly so i had to move my travel dates back 3 weeks,i spoke to Natwest bank insurance, they said "no problem change your travel dates and when you get back we will deal with it then".So i phone The travel company and they charged me £200 pounds to change our tikets i pleaded with them my wifes Thai and we allways fly Thai please have some heart under this situasion no joy.On our return to the U.K i called Natwest and they gave me there clame number spoke to them, they told me £50 pounds excess per person, so now my clame was worth £100 pounds, and they wanted a copy of my fathers death cert,so i posted it to them,1 week later i recived a letter wanting more proof,so i phoned them and said to them " is not a death cert enough" they replyed " no we want your fathers medical records to make sure there was no pre existening conditions," i told them wots my travel planes and my fathers death got to do with my policy its black and white...so i told them to f off.It does not matter wot country you are in they want your money and dont want to keep there part of the deal, but any responsible person allways takes out insurance in good faith, you have to try and trust one of them to feel a little bit secure its no different anywhere Maybe my insurance with the Bangkok bank in Surin is not worth the paper it is writen on but i hope i dont have to find out. |

Thanks Kendo. I'll have to shop around when I get home. Eighty pounds for two years seems pretty cheap? Are thoughs figures correct? Exactly what part of the premium is for the elephants and buffalo? _________________ Why is it called 'after dark' when it really is 'after light'? |

Hi Hobiecat, yeah does seem cheap i also could not belive i could have insured the house for up to 5 years. We went into the Bangkok bank in Presat Surin, they wanted some photos and told us to come back in 3 hours because they had to fax the details down to Korat (whilst eating a tray of mango) not in any hurry at all.On our return they gave us a copy on terms and conditions in thai and in English and when i read through it it did make me laugh i said to the wife "insured against elephants and buffalo crashing through the house thats a bit over the top" she replyed " no not really you have never seen an elephant or a buffalo bitten by a snake" ummm that food for thought, when they told us the price tariff for 1 to 5 years i could not be live it, so we settled for the 2 years last november at a cost of 5000 baht.A qestion for you wots with the name do you sail hobiecats. |
