More advice needed. I've been using Yahoo as a home page for years. Now however they are dropping content left and right, probably because of non-renewed contracts with the news providers/advertisers.
What I want is a home page where you can customize it with many different sources of news content, sports content (hopefully Premier League also which my Yahoo does not offer), worldwide weather, world stock exchanges, and other misc content....all in a nice compact package that is easy to navigate and view.
Appreciate any suggestions for good sources/sites others have found and like. Thanks. Pete _________________ "What America needs is a huge hypodermic needle of morality." Alice Cooper 21 Sept. 2007 |

My home page opens up onto this forum naturally!
I use news.google.com for a general news source combined with a few choice RSS feeds.
Windows Vista does a lot of this stuff, it has a side bar function that allows you to add components such as weather, forex, newsfeeds, sports updates etc.
Will be interesting to see what others use. _________________ I've got a bad feeling about this |

Pete, I do not think that you can go much past the http://www.bbc.co.uk site, has local and world sections, all the sport that you want, and most of what you have said you are looking for.
I suppose that you can look at say CNN or something like that for news, but cant pass comment on it as I have never used it

I'm playing with BBC now, we'll see how it goes. CNN I've tried and it takes ages to load. They use a lot of photos and other 'slow' loading things. As of this moment, BBC seems much faster. I use the BBC sites and have a skim through them before getting on to the interesting stuff - unless something catches my fancy! _________________ I know nothing |

Try Google any country domains will do (com, co.uk, etc).
https://www.google.com/accounts/Login?continue=http://www.google.com/&hl=en
If you have an account with them (i.e adsense, gmail, webmaster, beta tester, etc) first login.
When you visit the site, use the menus and get to the Reader section, then, you will be prompted to customise the page (home page) with all the features that Google has to offer (news, sports, currencies, etc).
It takes a bit organising in the beginning but it's free and you can login from any computer and your home page is there. _________________ Say mai penrai live longer! |

This has got the cogs turning now, can we have a list of what you'd like on a local, say Hua Hin based home page?
I'd have the following:
Local news feeds
Regional news feeds
Time and Date in select countries
Local weather report
Exchange rates
Links to useful related sites
Latest topics on local forum _________________ I've got a bad feeling about this |

OK, here we go, soup to nuts in addition to the above. Then you have a one-stop-shop that will keep everyone up to date on everything:
Reuters World News+Business+Sports+Internet
BBC World Edition+Sports
AP World News+Sports+Asia
AFP "/"/" + World Soccer
CNN
Guardian
Tech Web
AFP Technology.
A lead in line with the top 3-4 topics in each sparks interest. Pete _________________ "What America needs is a huge hypodermic needle of morality." Alice Cooper 21 Sept. 2007 |

Keep going with them .... could be something in the pipeline here, as long as all of the news resources have RSS feeds it can be done. _________________ I've got a bad feeling about this |

I don't understand "RSS" feeds as compared to the home page content the big boys offer?
Maybe a good time to enlighten Buksi?
Do people like Yahoo pay to, or get paid by, the news sources I listed above?
I know Yahoo and similar earn their revenue through advertising, but what do the news sources earn from allowing someone like Yahoo to link their sites?...sub-advertising visible on the news source pages once you get there? Pete
PS: To my above list you can certainly add in the New York Times but perhaps not enough Yanks on here to warrant it. If you were to do any newspaper site from the USA, that would be it, IMHO. No Foxes please. _________________ "What America needs is a huge hypodermic needle of morality." Alice Cooper 21 Sept. 2007 |

RSS is just a syndicated news feed, it actually stands for Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication and is a format for delivering regularly changing web content.
There is a feed on HHAD's homepage showing the latest topics on the forum, its all automatic and updates itself every time something new is posted.
Yahoo, Google and the like get paid through ads in their search results so they allow users to add feeds to customise their "home pages".
A lot of news sites actually don't run content and just syndicate it from others, the most successful one I know of is www.drudgereport.com.
All major news sources have their own feeds (I don't count Fox as "news"!) so building a local one with a combination of them shouldn't be too difficult.
The difficult bit is actually getting local news as any form of reporting or journalism seems to be frowned upon in Hua Hin so all we have are a bunch of glossy advertorials. _________________ I've got a bad feeling about this |
