Everyone thinks their own photo's are the best, its human nature. Personally I dont really care what other people think (well I do a little bit) But I like taking them so I will still keep on taking them. There is an old saying that is rather apt, it go's - 'one persons decorations are another persons skip fodder' (or something like that) Its well worth remembering.
Lets all keep enjoying doing what we like.
On a side not I think the photo comp needs some catagory's. like fish photo's or pics of people. The weirder the better in my opinion.
This months comp is pictures of street dog's say... or a pic of life in a market. It would make people go out and take new snaps... Just a thought. _________________ Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly!

Well said guys, it would be nice if some of the people that griped about these photos actually submitted their own ones - it does seem to be the same few people (myself included). Its not a competition for pros, there are no Pulitzer winners here, just a bit of fun which would be a shame if it stopped. _________________ Named must your fear be before banish it you can. |

| DawnHHDRC wrote: | Tell you what, guys - this is the first time I've entered & it'll be the last. Not because I've only got one vote (not me! I voted for 11), but because of the negative comments from many of you. Nowhere in the rules did I see that you had to be a professional photographer or that the horizon had to be level (not mine, either).
If you've made me feel inadequate & as if I wasted my time, how do you think you'd make a newbie to the forum feel? Bet there's a few people after reading your comments have decided never to enter this competition. |
Well, it is a competition. That implies some standards. The comments such as the one I made are only suggestions and any criticism has certainly been constructive - I don't think anyone has said that photo x is shite so I don't understand why so sensitive.
If I had taken a photo and been advised that the horizon wasn't straight I would think to myself; "hmmm, you're right, I'll try and get that right in future." Getting better at photography would be one positive outcome of entering a comp like this and getting constructive criticism. That's how we learn isn't it - hence my signature below (not the Giraffe one). If the Horizon had been straight on photo 3 it would have received at least two more votes - mine and Caller's.
On the other hand, maybe make it non-competitive and give everyone a participation certificate?
BTW, I didn't enter a photo, so no ulterior motive on my part! _________________ "The man who never made a mistake never did bugger all" - Old Welsh proverb

| Yes, and don’t worry about my comment; I’ve had one vote total out of two entries so far, and this time around I didn’t have time to work out the re-sizing bit that I have to re-learn every month! |

You really know how to hurt someone's feelings!
Seriously, I'm sure we all take it as a bit of fun. I for one would not submit an entry to help make up the numbers if I was worried what people thought. Hey, this is only the 4th competition and I've had 3 votes already _________________ Green Army position 10 2007/08

Well I did enter the first one!
I would have entered more but one of the rules is it can't have been shown elsewhere, some of mine have, like the one below - well it's one of Mrs C's actually, it looks like someone's in there to me!!!
I'm no ace photographer and use an Olympus digital compact thingy and I loved No.3 as I said in my post. It actually irked me the horizen wasn't level - I kept looking at it until it distracted me from the view - sorry.
I was aware of which photo was Randy's as he posted others from the same concert and it's a great photo, I just felt another was more attractive to me.
I knew which one was your photo Dawn, from a report on the train trip, I don't think you have to worry about the horizen with that shot! And as a result, I'm looking forward to going there in April, what better compliment is there than that?
I didn't mean to upset anyone - honest!

to all those that have entered the photo competitions, good on you all
constructive criticism is always welcome!! it is only a bit of fun after all & long may it continue to be that.
like most other entrants, i don't carry a tripod & super zoom lens around with me so my photos will always be just snapshots & not anywhere near the professional standard some hhad members seem to demand _________________ when all are one & one is all, to be a rock & not to roll. |

Just to clarify (esp to Jockey) I am not upset that I did not/am not do(ing) any better in the competition. I know my photo's not the best on there - hell, even I didn't vote for it. I voted for the one that I thought was best (11, though I liked 9, too). I loved the way the light was captured in no.11.
I just didn't like the negativity/'constructive' criticism. I thought it would put off new people from trying the competition. Even complete amateurs can sometimes get a good pic & why should they be put off from displaying it because it's not artistically up to grade? Maybe there should be 2 comps. One for the perfect artistic shots and another for those 'lucky' shots that complete amateurs can come up with. _________________ "The question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk? i voted for number 9. i just like that particular type of viewshot & besides the fact i think it was better than mine, i wouldn't feel comfortable voting for my own entry!!
11 entries & 33 voters so far, i assume there will be a few more entries next competition??
for those about to snap, we salute you!!! _________________ when all are one & one is all, to be a rock & not to roll. |

Great photos.
Went for 3.
I think if you can't say something nice about the photos, don't say anything.
Can you tell us all where the photos (scenic) were taken please. _________________ You only live once. |

Sorry, Kelpiekiss - got a feeling with the 10's of photos I've got (including some really horrific ones) through my work. I'd win that one hands down .
Where does that dog live? It's got a really bad case of mange by the looks of it (possibly a yeast infection too), but can be treated (if it can be approached). _________________ "The question is not, can they reason?
