We will be transferring the website and forum to a new web host this week and while we expect this to go smoothly there could be a couple of glitches and the odd missing post.

Likewise, whenever somebody offers us something with a seamless, flawless changeover at work, we can usually plan for a few unprogrammed days off - had 3 days 'working?' from home this year already

The forum will be offline for an hour or so at around 13.00 Friday 28th as we will be doing the transfer then.

Why don't they do it in the middle of the night when we are all asleep. That way there will be no disruption.

Offline? Is there some reason you can't just copy your files and database over to the new server, test it and when everything is working to your satisfaction change the nameservers?
Nothing happens to direct users to the new server until the nameserver changes propagate anyhow .. and they won't until the nameservers are changed at your domain registry.
It's going to take nameservers anywhere from minutes to days to take full effect worldwide. If you delete files on your old server prematurely, you very well may lose that traffic.
In that transition period, some traffic will will be directed to the old server, some to the new server. You may need to tweek the new database to retain all the posts made to the old server, but if your techies are good, that shouldn't be a problem.
After a week or so, when all is smooth, delete the old site files.
I doubt very seriously if you can get full nameserver resolution in 1 hour.
Just my opinion.

The transfer is complete but took longer than expected due to unreliable internet connections in Thailand.

Not sure yet, we're using redirects and the .net domain until the DNS resolves, post any glitches here and we'll be on the case!
One thing that does need redoing is the photo gallery as the databases were not compatible and the latest version of the software is funkier anyway!
