Hi there,
I will be returning to HH soon to start furnishing my house. I'm interested in buying bamboo beds. I found some websites but none list prices or responded to my enquiries. Anyone know of any shops in the area of even in BKK - what kind of price would I be looking at?
Also, is there a timber yard in town or near? Perhaps I might try and build some fitted wardrobes.
Thanks for your help

Try the weekend market in bkk. They have a wide range of furniture at low prices. You can also try some of the many shoping centers in bkk.

Please be really careful with bamboo furniture. Make double sure that the manufacturer/dealer certifys it to be free of the bamboo beetle.
This problem seems to be cronic here and the thing can live inside the bamboo throughout the manufacturing process and then one day manifest itself on the floor of your room in the form of wood powder, as it eats it way through all of it. You may think it's termintes but it's not, it's this beetle, and the process is somewhat slow.
I've gone through this with some outside furniture. We tried the insecticides and it did indeed kill the beetle, but apparently not the eggs inside the wood and they kept hatching and eating, until we simply threw the thing away.
Here's some reference to what I believe to be what we're talking about. Pete

PS: You also need to be careful with ANY wood furniture you have in your house, and the wood used in your house window framing, floors, door frames etc., concerning termites. If you're here when the rainy season begins, you'll see them swarm by the millions, everywhere. |

Let me add to this now that I'm thinking about it, concerning termites.
I've found that a primary target is always kitchen cabinets. Probably because they're made of soft and usually inferior wood. Some less expensive TV cabinets and whatever throughout the house are the same.
Many factors, usually a bright light in the kitchen, screen door opened and closed many times a day/evening, windows open etc. Termites seem to love kitchens.
With your cabinets and drawers, remove all of the hardware and hinges and put a hardening filler deep into the holes or affix barrier gaskets of some kind, then re-attach your hardware very tightly. This at least puts up a roadblock, as always termites get into the wood from behind hardware and hinges.
Don't ever try to rid your house of chingchokes (geckos), or your yard of frogs and toads. They are your best friend when termite swarming season arrives. You'll actually see them lined up everywhere waiting for a meal. With chingchokes, they also eat your house mosquitos. The only negative is that they tend to poop anywhere and everywhere...LOL.
Hope helpful. Pete |

Pete, you have very useful gekkos. Mine are completely useless at eating flies and yung, so much so I'm considering trading them in and getting some new ones. They are, however, premier league in the shitting stakes. I don't know what they eat to make so much shit, but they haven't made a dent in the mosquito polulation.
And I think the best place to buy wooden furniture in town is the place just on the left on the Pala-U road after you turn right over the railway line. _________________ ดวงขึ้น

Whatever they're eating it is from the insect family which is a good thing, unless they've gone veggie. Recruit a few tokays (FU lizards), as they seem to eat excess chingchokes, as well as insects. Pete |

Thanks for the advice.
I have plenty of experience with cockroaches but wasn't aware of beetles.
Will look much more carefully now.
Cheers

You realy never had an answer sammy.
South of HH - shortly after the highway around Khao Takiab - there's on you right a shop run by a swede and a young thai named Asian Living and about 100 m further south on the other side of the road you'll find W.O.L.F.
Both a good quality-shops.
Go have a look friend. |

| Sammy, seasoned tropical hard woods like teak seem to be resistant to termites, I think they are too hard to eat! I've seen some very old wooden houses in Issan that haven't been eaten so the right woods work but they tend to be expensive now. |
