It does reflect on young Westerners abroad.
too much money too much alcohol and too much testoserone.
It really pisses me that i know people in the UK that visit Pattaya for 2 weeks.
Play golf, use all the evening delights. And then tell me they know Thailand.
As a future Thai resident. I hope that we can be above that.
And show these good people.
We have a good heart.

That's well said.
Unfortunately, there are some meatheads over here and occasionally the Thai Authorities show them who's boss.
Simple as that.

Apparantly the spurs coach said that we'll whip Thaksins arse this season, someone didn't like that. Lost in Translation!

if they were being stupid or disrepectful, then yes they deserve all they get.
the story has gone slightly astray just within this little thread.the truth isnt by any means clear.
what if they are just innocent bystanders caught up in a thai gang fight?
its far to easy to surmise without the true facts & just because it happens to be 3 farangs that took the beating they must have somehow deserved it? thats far to stereotyped.
there is a steady increase in the unsavoury characters heading for the delights of thailand, i bumped into quite a few in bkk. it was one of the reasons i didn't go to pattaya.
fortunately they only get as far as nana plaza & pattaya.

ps pete, i've got to many tattoos! Smile , but i have got enough money for drinking & general merriment, carried out in a civilized & respectful manner, with my shirt on !! Cool

Of course, none of "all" the problems abroad are in anyway down to the Countries and their agents that heavily advertise their merchandise in the UK and elsewhere!

I remember when younger being tempted by the sun & sex lure of Ibiza. In fact, during one trip the bars/clubs in the town I was staying went on strike as the authrorities were trying to exert some sort of control over what was happening - its still happening over there now.

You reap what you sow!

Redzonerocker/pete : slightly off subject, I have a big tattoo which I have on my leg purely so it does not affend people in my office. In the last 7 years or so a tattoo is a fashion accessory, not an aggressive statement like it used to be in the 70's

This is borne out by the number of ladies who now have a tattoo.

Small is better and can be sexy if small and discreet on a lady.

Only my opinion but people with tattoos gat branded.........................

I can't believe how f*****g sanctimonious some of the comments are in this thread.

Farang = thug

Thai = victim

Anyone with half a brain knows that is sh*t.

The news article clearly states that the farangs were caught in the middle of something between Thais so why has this thread turned into a moralistic, head shaking, tut-tutting lament about UK yob culture being imported to Thailand? I can't see the connection.

How about Thai yob culture - home grown and not imported - like the pitched battles between rival technical college gangs across Thailand, the drunken beatings, stabbings and shootings dished out in any rural village after too much lao khao or Yah Baah and the unprovoked motosai hoodlums in the genteel sanctuary of Hua Hin!? Or maybe even like a violent confrontation between Thai soldiers and Thai football officials.

Talk about Chinese whispers - I'd credited users of this forum with a bit more f*****g intelligence but obviously I was wrong. Rolling Eyes

Jamie, I agree 100% with all that you said, this was all over Thai TV last Thursday morning, but did not appear in the BKK Post until late that evening.

Here is the defining sentance in all that was said.
"He said (The Soldier Chraged for the Assault) his group did not intend to hurt Patrick but the fighting erupted after a conflict between his group (The Soldiers) and Patrick’s Thai friends.

From that statement, I can see nowhere where it says that the Farangs were mouthing off, but the dispute was with "His Thai Friends" that he was in the bar with earlier. They happen to be spotted around town by the soldiers later in the evening, and the soldiers proceded to bash the sh*t out of them.

After they got to the hospital, the soldier who had by now rounded up more of his mates went to the hospital where it all kicked off again with the police standing there and doing nothing to stop it. (All this was reported on Thai TV News).

So to all those who for whatever reason enjoy slagging the sh*t out of anyone from the UK when this sort of thing happens, get a life and research the facts before shooting your mouths off.
Cheers Cheers Cheers Cheers

i agree that back in the 70's & 80's tattoos had a stigma related to aggressive or criminal behaviour.they have become fashionable nowadays because of the number of high profile celebrities that have them.
some people may not like tattoos but i can't understand how a tattoo can offend anyone?? Confused
sure i have been branded over the years but when people get to know me its not an issue.never judge a book by it's cover springs to mind Smile
i agree with you jaime. it's not only in thailand though.
it doesn't matter where you go in the world there are gang cultures. if you happen to get caught up in an altercation or dispute & you're a foreigner you will usually take the rap, it seems, especially if you are british.
we shouldn't assume the 3 people involved in this incident are guilty of misconduct just because they are farangs.

So what happened to the Thai 'friends' - rumour has it that they just disappeared.

Nice friends huh?

And if the Thai 'friends' caused all the problems, surely the military mob who attacked them could differentiate between Thai and falang.

I'm wholly (sorry, Suffolk phrase meaning completely) confused (as usual).

VS

P.S. Komfortablynumb. I do love the way you write, it's almost like poetry. I do also agree with what you say... (are you a P.F. fan?)

If some of the above comments are directed at me, all I can say in my defence is that I hadn't had a computer connection for 10 days and this news story passed me by until last night.
I wasn't passing comment on the situation.
Assumptions, and I wasn't making them in reference to this situation, were wrong.

This story is too full of holes to have any real grasp of what actually happened, particularly the bit where a mob descended on these people in a hospital. This seems a bit of an extreme action to take against someone who is not allegedly directly involved in an altercation in a noodle stall.
