That is a hell of a deal. In Morocco I was only offered 20 camels and no sandalls for my whole concubine of six. I was tempted. They eat a lot more but don't drink. I tried to do a 50 - 50 deall but the ones he wasnted were the same ones I wanted to keep and he was not up for a compromise.
I know we have had inflation since but surely the value of a woman must have decresd compare with that of a camel.
I have have tied hion down until I got the camels and let him keep the sandalls.

Mrs Trotter is currently trying to marry off her 15 year old daughter (my step daughter) to her 17 year old Thai boyfriend.
Mrs T is hoping to get THB100,000 and 5 Baht gold. I gather that may be a struggle for the lad's family and Mrs T may be willing to drop to THB80,000 and 4 Baht gold.
I have joked that I want THB1,000,000 plus a crate of whisky every month for the rest of my life. If she can persuade our daughter to marry a farang instead, then the price goes up to THB3,000,000 plus a crate of whisky every week.
It seems likely the wedding to the Thai lad will go ahead next year in the village. Mrs T is conducting the negotiations over the telephone from the UK. Our daughter will be just turned 16 when the wedding happens. She wants to marry this lad, but she also wants to continue at school. It seems this will be possible.
As for the dowry, Mrs T says it will all be given to her daughter and her daughter's husband to get them started. Mrs T has also earmarked some of our land to give them as a present. Not a bad start for a young couple.
I still like the whisky idea.

This an age old question that I and many others who've contributed to this thread have gone through before.
However - and I'm not having a go at you Trotter - your stepdaughter is just about legally able to get married - with her parents' permission. She can't make the decision here on her own. I'm sure you're aware that she's not old enough in the eyes of the law to do that. She's got to be 18 before she can decide for herself about marriage.
So why? Admittedly at 16 in the UK they can do it, but it generally happens without parental consent and becomes a "Gretna Green" job. Certainly, there's normally no money to be considered between the families at that age of bride.
Are you serious?

Hi Lomu
Mrs Trotter is deadly serious.
My stepdaughter is serious.
My stepdaughter's Thai boyfriend is serious.
His family are serious and are scrimping and saving like mad to get the cash together.
My stepdaughter is living in Thailand with her Thai grandparents and goes to the same school as this lad, they live in the same village and see each other every day.
Why should I not stand behind my wife and daughter and let them have what both their hearts want?
Just because western society's values and morals are different from those of Thailand does not make the western values right and the Thai ones wrong; nor does it mean the Thai ones are correct, of course. But I am prepared to recognise and accept that there are cultural differences and to "go with the flow". This is Thailand so I accept the Thai cultural values.
I wonder what would happen if my step daughter does not marry next year. She may leave school and continue to see this lad anyway, and perhaps become an umarried mother. She may stay on at school until she is 18, or she may end up going to university in Chiang Mai. A good education is no guarantee of a good career in LOS. She might be lucky enough to get a career as a teacher or a doctor. Then again, even with a university degree, she could also end up back at home working in the rice fields or drifting south to Bangkok to work on a building site, or be drawn by the bright lights of Pattaya where she would get a job in the "hospitality" industry and perhaps have a 50-odd year old farang boyfriend.

Believe me, its not only in Thailand. University these days is the Government's way of keeping young people off the dole queue. I know dozens of kids here in the UK who have got their degrees, and can get no better than a part time job stacking shelves in Tesco.

Very valid points, Trotter.
As you say, if your step daughter is denied what she wants, then there's a chance she'll rebel and run off anyway, which is hardly a good start to her adult life.

Trotter you and me both mrs sarge and mrs trotter have the exact same figures 100,000 bht and 5 bht of gold 
I am also trying for 25,000 bht a kilo for extra kilos but cant get my 23 year old daughter to eat chocolates bummer 
she is at school and the wedding will be when that is finished daughters decision 
He is army and down south a very nice guy as well

Education + Parents yearly income, everything else is a minus. they assume the girl is a virgin.
Married before nothing to pay.
Children a minus.
Bar Girl a minus.

Thanks Skandii, I needed a laugh on this damp, grey, SW London afternoon. Any opinions on Thai ladies not from Burrirum?

For what its worth, my missus was surprised at the age of Trotters perspective son-in-law, she thought 17 very young, but if he was 20/21, well, all is okay, seemingly. 
I still find some aspects of Thai-life baffling and I'm sure that will forever be the case.

I am confused now which is not difficult on this subject that I have no knowledge of.
Is Buriram & Buiram the same place with different spellings.
Is a BG a Bamboo Grove or a Bar Girl. I have not seen many Bamboo Goves in Isan so I'm assuming it is Bar Girl.
I have been told the same story about Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, Korat, Ubon, Roi Yet, Kalasin, Nong Khai and many other provinces in the North East.
Did these statistics come from the Guiness Book of Records or another source. You have to be careful with Wikipedia as the public are allowed to edit it.
Another thing that I read lately is that the place for the meeting a nice lady is in fact Tesco Market Village. I am sure that I read this on this forum. The trouble I can see there is that if you pay the Sin Sod for a girl you meet at Tescos will it be subject to VAT and do I get a free packet of screwdrivers with it or a bar of soap attached with sticky tape cos if not surely the trek to Big C would be better value.
If I own a business and have a work permit can I claim back the VAT through the business as legitimate ongoing business expenditure.
I must admit that Buri Ram has got a ring of truth about it. If all the girls have gone from the province it means that they will not be riding around the province on motorcycles endangering people lives with their complete inability to ride a bike and lack of understanding that they share the road with other vehicles. Now Buri Ram claims the lowest death by motorcycle accident rate in the whole of Isan.
All makes senses doesn't it.
Just a quick question for Caller.
If in some terrible set of circumstances that you had to re-marry in the future and you chose one of your neighbors, would you have to pay a Sin Sod to her family and would that we a one off payment or would you then have to invest in a garden full of kennels to keep her lunch fresh.

your statement most bar girls are from buriram shows it, girls from Hua Hin born and bred will tell you they are from buriram girls from buriram will tell you they are from udon girls from udon will tell you they are from friggin israel if they think it will help them what bargirls dont generally tell you on a first or second encounter is where they ACTUALLY come from

2 years ago they all came from nakhon sri thamarat next year ???????
