I'm a little concerned here.

If there has been a lot of trouble, I wouldn't mind knowing where it was, so I don't go there expecting the usual ambience of Hua-Hin nightlife and get a bunch of boozed-up knife-wielding Millwall fans in my face.

You don't have to worry carlito, this tread was started by a maniac and it all turned out to be a false alarm. Nothing at all to even think about.

I only met Chelsea supporters here and they are ok.
Well, some of them.

Just remember never to speak about Arse***

Carlito,

Norseman is right. There is nothing to worry about. Occasionally problems occur usually fueled by alchohol and the pressures of working here in Thailand.

Overall it is a much more secure environment than many places in the west.

I have spent years in Ealing in West London (generally considered to be an up market suburb of London), Sunningdale in Berkshire (that boasts the highest average house price in the European Union) and Santa Clara (an up market suburb of the Bay Area of CA). In all I saw more ugly incidents per month than anywhere in Thailand.

The biggest social problem I see here is the abnormally high rate of accidents resulting in serious injury or death.

Too true, ever heard a conversation go something like this? -

Farang to TG: "So, you have a child. Do you have a husband then?"

TG to Farang: "He die all-leddy"

Farang to TG: "Oh, I'm sorry. How did he die"

TG to Farang: "AC-SEE-DENT!"

Doubt they will be around for long as they do not have work permits or any money. Even the prostitutes in [edited] wont go with them and they are all dire.

Mrsmagoo,

There is absolutlely nohning to worry about in Hua Hin.

It is probably the best place to come to in Thailand especially if you have children with you.

The dangerous side is confined to local businessmen.

You will not see it.

Come here and enjoy.

I have 3 and ten year old boys - they love it! Beach is loooooong, sandy and uncrowded. You can always find a quiet spot and there are other attractions in the area - elephant rides, go karting etc for when you get bored at the beach. Swensens Ice Cream parlour (its on the main road near the main crossroads in town) seems to be a big hit with the kids too. I am sure you'll have a great time.

Just to put the "troubles" in Hua Hin into perspective, I have just returned to the UK aftre three weeks in HUa Hin, and have read in the local press that there were over 30 stabbings in London alone on New Years Eve - oh and it's b****y cold.

What a good question Norseman (happy new year by the way!).
I am not sure if Oe will be able to write what she calls our good friend Wij!! One thai friend suggested this - Nikloo" (this apparently means chocolate falang - no offence by the way the girl said it was fine to say) Mayybe Oe will help on this.

Excepting if you are a white skinned Chinese or Japanese. I would think Caucasian race would me more apt.

As for Wij he gets called many names including Farang. However I think most Thais realise that his racial origin is Indo-Asiatic.

The explanation I have heard for the use of the word Farang in Thai is that most of the Caucasian people that Thais first encountered were French and that Farang is justa corruption of Farancee.

Historical accounts of Thailand do not back this theory up however.

The French were late comers on the Thai scene being preceded by Portugese, Dutch, Germans, British and Italians.

I would also like an explanation of why in Lao a Caucasian is referrred to as Buksida. What is the origin of that word.
