Sometime in November ther will be the Dragon Boat Races held on the Pranburi River.
Very Happy
To those who have not witnessed these events all over Asia then this is your chance to see and even get INVOLVED.
Sad
The event will consist of qualifying races and several rounds of racing before the final.
Rolling Eyes
Barry of Mermaid Cruises fame and myself would like to get a team of Farangs together to enter the races and join in the fun.
Mr. Green
We are assured of being given a boat to be used - all that is needed now is a crew.
Idea
Barry is even offering his Charter Boat - The Mermaid - to be used as a base for encouragement, team briefings and I suppose a centre for the consumption of refreshing liquids.
Cheers

This could be a good day out and a chance to blend more with the local community.
Razz
Chances are we could arrange to be knocked out in the first round and then enjoy the rest of the day with a grandstand view from The Mermaid
Wink
Anyone crazy enough to give this a go PM me or Barry and maybe we can get a team organised.
Twisted Evil
Chockers

thumbs up
T

Don't think I'd be up to row but it sounds like good fun so I wouldn't mind joining in as a spectator.

As per BG's response, unless I get fit again, which is unlikely.

Come on guys - you can do better than that.

I'm as unfit and flabby as the best of you.

You seem to be missing the point

In Australia, the dragon boat racing is very popular when the Asian country's have their own celebrations here at various times of the year.

Have seen the ones on Sydney Harbour, a lot of companies have their own sponsered boats and the day is great fun.
There are the serious races for those who take the day that way, but most seem to be on the fun side of things with lots of drink and food after.

I think the idea of being knocked out in the 1st race and then retire for refreshments for the rest of the day sounds tops.
Cheers Cheers Cheers

For all those of you who think it will shag you out - trust me, it won't. I took part in a dragon boat race here in the UK recently and I am as flabby and unfit as the rest of you beer wallahs. It was good fun and not nearly as taxing as I thought it would be. Each race only lasts for about a minute and once the boat picks up speed, which is quickly, the boat glides through the water like a knife through butter. Very satisfying, I have to say!

I've just spoken to the trainer of the local team, which has won the event for the last 2 years.
He's happy to let us use their spare boat and is also quite willing to give us a bit of coaching so we can at least stay upright.

There's no need to worry much about fitness. The course is only a couple of hundred metres downstream and we'd just be taking part for the fun of it.

As Terry said, we'll provide our 70 ft teak passenger cruiser, "The Peacock", as a base. We will be given a mooring from where we can see the start and finish line for the whole day.
We will also provide one of our speedboats as a water taxi to ferry people between our private pier and the boat throughout the day.

These boats normally seat 20 -30 Thai participants.
So we are only aiming for 10 - 12. Let's get a few people interested and maybe meet down in Pak Nam few a few beers and a chat about it.

Sounds like a laugh! I do not think we would have to "arrange" to get knocked out in the first round, i think keeping the bloody thing afloat would be a miracle, the thought of BG and Lomu rowing the hearts out while supping Chang beer is a cracking image in the mind!!

Are women allowed? If so, & training fits in with the dog center, I'll give it a go. Got to warn you, though, I've never done anything like that before, so don't blame me if I'm useless! Wink

Barry

Sorry for misquoting 'The Peacock', but the logo of the mermaid with the big mangos still haunts me.
Wink

Dawn

I've seen ladies teams in Taiwan but never mixed teams.
However, I personally think it's a great idea that you join in

Lomu, i think you and BG may provide a decent match in the Chang supping stakes!
