What the hell is happening to cable tv? seems the only few channels we had to watch are going fast. The two film channels have gone so has Star world, BBC world came and went without a trace. The Australian network channel is changing to a new sattellite on Jan 1st so you can bet your bottom dollar that will vanish as well. Reality zone and Now tv are a joke and repeat themselves all the time. I don't watch much tv so dont really want ubc, its just now and again its nice to sit down for half an hour or so and veg out. Thank god for cheap dvd's..... _________________ Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly!

When the local film channel went - as it does from time-to-time - my missus called to ask what was happening. The reply was that the owner dosn't want to buy any more Western DVDs, so we've got to make do with satelite.
My gut feel is that they've been told to stop airing the Western stuff as they don't have a licence to do so - that's been the reason given in the past. I read that 3 cable operators in BKK had been shut down for doing the same.
Suppose it's wait and see. Like you Randy, I'm loathe to get UBC, so the only other alternative is not to pay cable and make do without the goggle box. I'll probably keep with it though. The wife would go ape without her soaps. _________________ "I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars - the rest I just squandered". George Best. |

But now we got a Spanish channel and maybe have a chance to pick up some Canary bad language. LOL.
I assume we have a lot of Spaniards living here? _________________ I intend to live forever -- so far, so good. |

I confess - it's all down to me. I've been lobbying the cable co. for a Spanish channel for the last nine months under the guise of over 2000 assumed names - all Spanish.
The cable guy told me that all the farang languages are the same anyway! _________________ "The man who never made a mistake never did bugger all" - Old Welsh proverb

I didn't want to go the UBC route either (in Bangkok) so I got a digital C/Ku 7.5 foot moveable dish and now get a lot of 'free-to-air' channels. About five hundred of them. Some companies offer in-built decoding so I get the likes of HBO, Disney and Nickelodeon (for the kids), Discovery, Nat Geo etc for free.
Typical disadvantages are, you need a place to mount the dish, initial cost, and it is affected by the weather. There are times when password changes force a change of program selection, but this typically is only for a couple of days. Most receivers these days come with a smart card slot if you want a better selection of programming, but I have not found it necessary.
Considering the amount I would be forking out for UBC over the two years I've had the upgraded system (I was running analog C-band off a ten-foot dish before), the system has more than paid for itself.
Below is a link to some C-band programming; I'm aimed most of the time at the one over the Phils where I can get Ku-band with most of the UBC programming content.

It's around the 20,000 baht mark, but I bought mine piecemeal as I had other bits and pieces I could use. Make sure installation is included in the overall deal, as another satellite installation company wanted to charge me 4,000 baht just to set it up. In the end, I did it myself, though for this setup I'd advise a proper installer.
Get the Dynasat setup, not any other. I'll recommend the F-1 receiver with a dual C/Ku LNB and a moveable 7.5 foot dish.
The website is in Thai, but they do have a phone number, so you can find out from them if they have a local installer in HH.

If you want only local channels, you could instead get the Samart DTH (Direct-To-Home) Ku fixed mini dish for 7,900 Baht excluding installation. Installation is another 1,500 baht, but if you can use a power drill, point a compass, and balance on a roof, I'd advise installing it yourself. They include a step-by-step installation CD-ROM that walks you through the procedure.
