Back to nightstalkers post.

Most bars are still charging around 70baht a beer - 55ish for Chang. 90 is a bit expensive but find the bars that dont charge over the top and keep away.

As was mentioned earlier - rents are increasing all the time - and to this - cost of beer and spirits particularly go up every few months - the demand for wide screen tvs and UBC - with many bars now if you get good staff you have to pay over the odds to keep them. None of the bars which i drink in charge 90 baht so they are out there.

I reckon that if you look at the 90 baht chargers most will be Thai run and owned.

Cheers,

JW

Steve G, I live in Neudorf so I have an idea where you mean......it's not the prices that worry me over here though.

I envy you the trip to HH for the month of December.

Yes, I’m up here working at Luxembourg airport in the cold drizzle this afternoon and I’m looking forward to it myself!

Theres two points I would like to make about the more recent posts:

1) It seems its the upwards drive in rent and inconsistency between greedy landlords thats driving the increases and variance in beer prices...rents in central are going crazy from what I gather and dont seem to correlate with the type of bar you rent.....that or the very occasional fly by night merchant....

2) At the end of the day a big bottle of Heineken here costs about 90baht at the max.....so thats about £1.50........go back to the UK and I challenge you to find a bottle of the same in ANY bar for anything like the same price.

£1.50 buys you a half of draft crap in the pubs back home.

Here y get a bottle of frosty beer and a big smile off the barmaid.....thats me sold.

And at the bottom end 65 or 70 baht is about £1.10.....tell y what if you are that worried about 40 pence a beer difference you are either a big drinker or a miser....

Choose the bar on whether or not you like it, not on how much the beer costs.

On the Chang point I only drink it when I want to get seriously pissed - dont know what it is but I always end up mullered.....great beer...crappy hangover

The problem is, Sandman, that LOS is sold to many as cheap. Whoever is at fault and for whatever the reason, if prices in bars always hike up - although if the majority are still 70b, then thats not an issue so far - then people may choose alternatives. Sipping a few bought in a supermarket or wherever, perhaps on a balcony, even with a town view, as I have done in the past, is an easy and pleasant, cheap alternative.

PostPosted: Sun Nov 25, 2007 10:10 am    Post subject: Tiger Bar Reply with quote

I arrived Friday and read previous post re beer at 90 Baht. At lunch I went in Tiger bar. There was 1 girl talking to a customer so I sat down and ordered a small Singha. After 10 mins or so the girl came and said hello and finally sat down to talk. I finished my beer and ordered 1 more and asked the lady if she wanted a drink. She ordered a Heineken. I finished my drink and asked for the bill expecting around 300 Baht max. It was 400 baht. I said bill is wrong. She had charged me 90 Baht for Singha but also 2 heineken at 110 each even though the lady already had her drink when I entered the bar! I complained and the bar girl said she would pay. I said i will pay the bill but I won't be going back.
So I thought, 90 Baht is the going rate. That night in U Turn only 60 baht and similar everywhere else. Avoid Tiger bar as expensive and they load their bill. Let's name and shame the expensive bars. I hope the owner is a member of this forum and reads this................

Sandman, you cannot compare Thai prices with UK or any other country. Compare like for like so compare one bar in HH with another in HH.

Yes it's only 90 Baht but its 50% more than 60 Baht for the same drink.

Cheers

Agree with Pagey, it does wind me up when people keep comparing prices to the UK, many of us live and work here and are not on UK salaries so a 50% price difference will make the difference to what bars we drink in.

As for loading drinks yes, a number of bars load up 30% if you buy a drink for a girl, even though its an identical bottle of beer you'll pay extra to cover the girl's "tip" without eating into the bars profit.

I couldn't agree more. This sort of wide-eyed 'everything's so cheap' attitude extends across the board, from drinks, to meals, to markets and to property. All it achieves is to send prices rocketing up beyond the reach of anyone not earning a 'Western' salary.

sandman67 I am with you 100% on all you said. No offence to the locals that live in HH, I know that it may be hard on you guys with the price going up all the time, but for people who are holidays from anywhere overseas, I really do not know how you have the front to moan about the beer prices in HH or anywhere in Thailand.

When I can buy a bottle of heinikin for the equivilant on about 3 australian dollars (cost at home from $7.00 upwards) that is great. But for holiday makers that moan at that price, there is an old saying. "If you cannot afford it do not do it".

Next time save a bit more money before you come on holiday and then you will not have to worry as much when you are paying at least 50% cheaper price for your beers.

Other than that spend your time sitting and drinking outside the 7-11 shops, they sell beer even cheaper in there and also sell food. You will not even have to move when you want to eat.

Thailand is not alone with the problem of locals paying top dollar ar the tourists.
I lived in Cairns in North Queensland for a year and is the same there. All pubs, cafes and eating places you pay top dollar tourist prices, so the problem is not only happening in Hua Hin, it is a world wide problem. Is just something we have to get used to

Buksida

It wasn't the price of the lady drink so much as the fact they made me pay for the one she was already drinking when I walked in the bar !

I used to go to U-Turn, but Im not a huge fan of R n B.
Earth Bar in Chomsin Road is great. Live reggae and Jazz. Great vibe!
Can anyone recommend a dance club with house music?
Cheers
