how do you tell a home constructed by lesbians?
its all tongue in groove, not a stud in the joint. _________________ But I could be wrong.

oops did I forget the concrete ?
spotted any leaks yet ?
The house I look after for a friend has cpac monier tiles with bedded ridges .It is 5 years old .2 years ago a couple of cracks appeared in the walls after several earthquakes .No leaks to date .
We recently built an outbuilding on a development that uses the same roof type .It doesn't leak .Nor does the main house .Some friends own the house 2 doors down .Doesn't leak .
We will shortly be building a house for a client using monier roof tiles .Guess what ? It won't leak . |

bedded ridges, thats exactly i said. not ridges placed on a raised concrete plinth.the ridge covers the tile, it cannot leak. it looks a good quality construction.

miked,
were all talking about same thing here just different terminology. I never said ridge tiles are on concrete plinth, i said they're raised on concrete bedding
before they're laid they put down cement on tiles under, like laying a brick, might only be raised 10 to 15 mil
.

There is an additive to the mortar used for ridge caps that makes it pliable and less likely to crack.
By the way I thought concrete was sand rocks and cement. Not realy suitable up on the roof.

Thank you for the compliment Miked .I will pass it on to the (university educated and fully qualified) builder .
It winds him up sometimes when us farangs slag off all Thai builders .It also winds him up that many times he loses jobs by being undercut, only to see later on that the job is substandard and cost way over his initial quote , let alone the other guys .
BTW I always thought that ridges were "pointed" the same as brickwork is pointed ? Or are we splitting hairs ?

ok, ok, those who know you know you've got more hair than any of us, hippy!
this is how i understand it, but im no roofing expert....
the 'pointing' of the ridge tiles is the main line of defence to stop water ingress
the 'bedding' is to give the ridge tiles added strength during storms etc and a 2nd line of waterproofing defence to seal the gaps under the ridge tiles

just to clarify things a little Avalon also use cpac monier tiles and not the large sheets.
and just to throw something in that most of the new houses in the UK do not bed the ridge tiles at all, they use a dry ridge system where two special guides are used and plastic clips. you can unclip the ridge tiles and lift them off.
I used this system on my selfbuild in the Uk 8 years ago. |
