Asian PGA Tour coming to Hua Hin

Renowned Thai seaside resort Hua Hin will host a new Asian Tour event next year when the Black Mountain Masters makes its debut, with several European golfers already signed up.

The 500,000 US dollar event will be staged from March 26-29 at the Black Mountain Golf Club with Thai star Thongchai Jaidee spearheading the local challenge.

Swedish stalwart Jesper Parnevik, who has five victories on the USPGA Tour, and European Tour winners Johan Edfors of Sweden and Finland's Mikko Ilonen have also confirmed their participation.

"We are delighted to welcome on board a new and exciting tournament in Thailand on the Asian Tour in 2009," said Asian Tour Executive Chairman Kyi Hla Han.

"Thai players have achieved so much success over the past decade and it is timely that their rise in stature on the Asian Tour is reflected as well with the emergence of new tournaments in the Kingdom."

The tournament will comprise the leading 148 Asian Tour professional players and eight invites.

Another golfing event coming to Hua Hin ...

Top junior golfers from around the world will take part in the Singha Thailand Junior World Golf Championship 2008 next month.

The tournament, which will take place at Royal Hua Hin golf course in Prachuab Khiri Khan from Dec 11-14, comprises two categories - team and individual.

Each category includes four classes - A (boys and girls aged 15-17 years old), B (boys and girls 13-14), C (boys and girls 11-12) and D (boys and girls 9-10).

The Thai contingent will be the biggest team with 20 juniors taking part while Indonesia and Taiwan will send 16 players each.

Other participating nations are: Singapore (10), the Philippines (9), Zimbabwe (4), Bangladesh (4), Hong Kong (4), China (3), England (2), Laos (2), Ukraine (1), Holland (1) and Japan (1).

I will definitely go and watch the kids playing - its great watching young talent playing golf with no fear! Will be very entertaining! Its a fantastic opportunity for us to watch top flight pros playing at Black Mountain too, any who have never witnessed real ball striking should take a look - many of these guys do actually hit in 300yards - not just dream about it!

Cant wait for both events! Cheers

Thai golfers dominated Thailand Junior World Championships, the first ever world-class amateur tournament held in the country, with Ariya Jutanugarn taking the top honours by winning the overall title yesterday.

The highlight on the final day of the event held at the 6,743-yard Royal Hua Hin Golf Course was the contest for the overall championship, which turned out into a duel between the 13-year-old girl Ariya and Thitiphun Chuayprakong, three years her senior.

Ariya, the former Junior World champion, put her male counterpart in the shade by blasting a blistering final round of six under par 66 for an aggregate of 282, three strokes better than Thitiphun.

"I am very glad to clinch the championship with the six-under-par score. I am happy although I should have done better," she said.

"The overall competition is fun and I gained plenty of experience," said a delighted Ariya, the younger sister of Junior Open champion Moriya.

Thitiphun, who won this year's Lion Cup tournament in Singapore, took home the Boys' Class A title, while Chirapat Jao-Javanil won the Girls' Class A division with the total score of even-par 288.

Atiwit Janewattananond, who posted the total score of five under par 293, claimed the Boys' Class B title. Wad Phaewchimpplee clinched the win in the Girls' B category.

Generally, entry into Asian Tour events is free but it is up to the host sponsor

The girls on the driving range say its free and if you are really keen they have to be on duty at the practice driving range at 5am for the early tee times.

The inaugural 2009 Black Mountain Masters is set to thrill golfing fans after receiving backing from major sponsors.

The full-field Asian Tour event which boasts a prize purse of US$500,000 will take place from March 26 to 29 at the Black Mountain Golf Club and has already garnered the support of many top sponsors in the Thai kingdom including PTT, Federbrau, TAT, and Hua Hin Hoteliers Club.

"Black Mountain Masters will be a signature event not only for Hua Hin but for Thailand as well. The international recognition and positioning of the tournament fits the brand image of PTT and we are pleased to give the event our full support,"said Mr Sarun Rungkasiri, Executive Vice President, Corporate Communications and Social Responsibility for PTT.

"It is very encouraging to see the growth of golf in the country. I hope the home ground advantage will give me an edge in the competition and all my friends and supporters will come to the course and give me all the encouragement and support," said Prom.

While golf will undoubtedly be the attraction for the week, the event will further raise the profile of Hua Hin as a top tourism destination of choice.

I will go one or more days... as hot as it is, I hope they do have plenty of beer and water concessions (in that order) like they do at U.S.P.G.A tournaments! Cheers
