Pagey, don’t worry, there will still be all the people who don’t read HHAD, who plough their life’s savings into buying a bar and then pay for the upkeep out of their own pockets so we’ve got somewhere nice to drink!

Pagey; since you are into finance,why not spend your time working out the most advantageous places to give you the best return and a risk level that is acceptable to you. It is possible to make 7.5% and only pay 2% tax on the profits. The risk is currency conversion.

Hi Norm : Understanding financial markets is not the same as processing a Payroll, it is far more difficult !

Half my capital is offshore earning 4.5% tax free and half in a yearly bond earning 5.5% tax free.

I am sure there are higher risk investments I could put a %age in.

Opening a new bank account now I am in Saudi is v. difficult as I no longer own a home so don't have a UK address and utility bills as proof etc.

However, I am open to any suggestions. Cheers

Pagey;

I retired 23 years ago, on my 50th birthday. Have not regretted it for a minute. Spent 12 years traveling around the world with my wife and then we settled into Australia on a retirement Visa. They no longer do that so we are living Hua Hin and truly enjoying it. Last time I checked you can make 8% for a one year deposit in New Zealand and they only tax you 2% of the profit. The down side is the currency conversion can cause fluxuations in the value of the money being held in NZ. Or anywhere else.

It does not take a any monitoring as it is fixed. You do need to take a trip to New Zealand to establish the account. They will not issue a credit card but will give you a ATM card. The last couple of times we had money wired it took just a few hours and it was in our account in HH.

It is not for everyone but we have more $ now than we had when we retired in 1984. You only go around once so enjoy it.
