Reminds me of Tesco and other supermarkets back in the UK, years ago, when they used to chain up the chiller cabinets etc or even block off the booze aisle.
I always used to wonder why there was queue there just before 11am - until I joined it. Shocked
Nothing like a forward step towards the modern world, is there?

I've been trying a little quiet radicalisation of the populace - I suggested that they dont vote for any of the politico-prats who voted for, or support this farce. As I said to them, I wouldnt vote for anyone who treated me like a stupid child or harmed my business.

so far my suggestions seem to be having effect - most of my thai mates said they hadnt thought of that one. Mind you, most of them also laughed when I asked if they were voting at all..... Confused

Let's put this into perspective. All bars patronised by farangs have been targeted heavily. 'Thai' bars have business as usual. A young policeman openly approached me whilst I was supping my coffee and pointed out that his bar is open as usual and you can drink as much as you like. I've just collected a dozen ice cold beers from my local shop - no problem.

In Pattaya, City Hall hadn't decided whether to close the bars until late yesterday. Again, all farang type bars were shut down with the threat of heavy penalties. However, even in the popular bar areas, some bars were openly selling beer and spirits. These are owned by the police and of course are buzzing!! One bar owner pointed out that the same weekend last year he took over 50K and this year it will be zero of course.

Mentioned in an article in the Bangkok Post today were the words, '...the sale of alcoholic drinks at voting venues were banned.' That implies that outside of those areas, it is permitted.

This is just another way at kicking the farangs, but boosting police owned businesses. The further downside is that many businesses who are struggling through another 'quiet' high season, loses turnover on two of the busiest weekends in the year.

Disgraceful!

Isn't it about time the Ferang's had some kind of proper representation in this country? Cussing

We pay taxes, can't vote, can't buy land, can't work even for free, can't take up a hobby without a work permit - it would drive you drink (sorry can't drink!)

Walked round the shopping mall today at 17.30.
One falang walking out with two crates of Chang.
No problem!

Had a bottle or two of Chang at our favourite watering hole today. Just 50 metres away from a polling station and out in the sticks. It was business as usual. No question of hiding the bottles or drinking out of mugs.

Sadly, the crazy laws (and I use that term loosely) seem to only affect the farang run bars, which are, from what I hear, really suffering from the lack of tourists this year.

Come on Thailand! We've had the Tsunami, a Military Coup and some murders - which are all reported in the tabloids in the West. And now holidaymakers are denied alcoholic drinks because of a (another loose term) democratic election. Great news for the tourism industry! I feel sorry for the unaware tourists who have booked the Christmas holiday period here...

VS

Edited due to typo - too many Changs...

Meanwhile up in the wintery north of Thailand it's just as bad.
On Loh Kroi, Chiang Mai every bar apart from 1 or 2 family restaurants was closed, shutters down and not even any lock-ins allowed!
As I rode down the street amazed at the surreal aspect of the street being silent, all around me were hundreds of aimless farang tourists, like something out of dawn of the dead, not knowing what to do! Shocked
I finally found a speak-easy bar owned by this maverick thai cowboy dude (think bob marly crossed with carabao) who just turned the lights down low.
After a few rum and cokes who should show up but the BIB! All off-duty, one of them glowers at me (I ignore the prick) wondering whats in my glass.
Eventually they all sit down nearby and out comes the 100 pipers whiskey!
Amazing Thailand with its crazy tricks!
After 6PM tomorrow the bars are able to sell drink again, apparently... Wink

Went for lunch yesterday, before going to the book swap. I asked for a soda water. They asked me why I didn't want beer and, curious, I asked whether they were allowed to sell it. No problem - just put it in plastic milkshake type cups. Razz So, they're prepared to take the risk (some of them)

Amen to that - can't see it happening for a long time though, the powers that be simply don't like us, they tolerate us but they don't like us.

A good example is the alcohol crackdown on farang bars only while the Thai cop run karaoke places are partying like theres no tomorrow - all laughing at the stupid farangs that aren't allowed to drink!
