Police walked around Soi Binthabath to inform, that bars have to be closed ...but just for 2 days (14th, 15th).

Next weekend it seems to be the same! Confused

Quote:
Booze ban till Monday for advance voting

No alcohol will be on sale or served at any event across the country from 6pm today until midnight on Sunday as voters cast advance ballots this weekend for the general election.

Bar owners have been warned it will be enforced.

The same strict regulation will be applied next week, from 6pm on Dec 22 to midnight the next day, polling day.

its official in Bangkok post today--better get to Halex and stock up ,plenty of beach partys this weekend!
anyone having a barbie.

The ban is to prevent canvassers entertaining voters at boozy parties before they go off to cast their votes.

Violators risk a fine of up to 10,000 baht or a maximum of six years in jail, under the election law.

Pol Gen Vichien Potphosri said full security will be in place. Advance voting is tomorrow and Sunday.

About 2.8 million people have applied to cast advance votes.

Cheers
goverment scared people might get drunk and vote for the RIGHT party.

Yep time to stock up early and get out your coffee mugs!

I can appreciate the law here but farangs can't vote anyway so why not make them exempt? I guess we're too much of a bad influence on all those teetotal Thais!

Didn't think the ban started until 6pm tonight? I've literally just come back from my local shop after having bought some beers. No problem. I asked whether he'd be selling tomorrow and he just asked "why not". Hadn't heard anything about this weekend and I don't thing he cares. Will probably wrap my stash up tomorrow in newspaper to help me negotiate the tricky and dangerous bootleg run back to my bunker - all of 200 yards. Cheers

That would make perfect sense (prefix "non" to that last word). Shocked

I remember the last election day where some bars (outside of the bar area) were interpreting the law as meaning Thais can't drink bur Farangs can. I was told in one bar "You can have a drink but your wife can't". A sensible idea.
The object is to keep Thais sober (fat chance) so why target the bar area where 99.99% of customers are Farang who have no influence at the voting booths?

Crazy Thailand!

I went for a meal tonight at 'The Dukes' and asked if I could have a glass of wine with my steak, to be politely told no. An English couple behind us also asked for beer and were also told no, much to their bemusement, although they were told that it was a 'special couple of days' all over Thailand where no one could drink. After the meal we took a drive around to see how things were and we didn't see a single bar open, either in town, on our way home along the canal road or any of the local bars where we live. I assume this will be the same on Saturday and Sunday too, although I would also think that the ban should be relaxed come 6pm Sunday?
My thoughts on this are that the whole exercise is effectively an admission of failure by the Thai government (past and present) to educate their population about civic responsibility and 'sensible' drinking habits; it is also a ridiculous attempt because all it will do is mean the drinking and failing to turn up to vote will be done at home, and it will also fail if it is an attempt to prevent some form of vote buying with drinking parties. The whole thing is a farce and just costs the country in lost trade and loss of face with tourists who are experiencing this now. And this isn't even the 'proper' election, but the weekend of voting for those who (as far as I can make out) won't be able to vote on the 24th, a procedure I have never heard of before anywhere else.

I didn't have a problem getting beers tonight and I'm suitably drunk.
Mind you, I'm supping at home
